thanks guys-wonder if putting one [shutoff] in the line would restict the fuel flow so much it would impact the tractor performance, anyone ever put one in?I have an L2500 and it has no shut-off valve. I was really suprised. I spoke with a mechanic about this and he told me there are pliers (somewhat like vice grips) that are used to shut off fuel lines etc. without harming the lines. I just did the quick change method myself.

trust me chilly807 that there is a big fuel flow when the filter is removed, one must be quick when putting new filter on. Don't do it in any area that you don't want a mess. at least with the l2500]If it's like mine (L3400) according to the manual there will be no fuel flow when the filter is removed for cleaning. Mind you, I haven't tried it yet, and I think I'll be outside with a pail and a pair of pliers handy when I do try it, but that's what the manual says.
If you do add a shutoff valve, you're not going to need a big one, the snowblower size (Tecumseh) should be big enough. If that was left open it would drain the tank in about half an hour, if you burn more than that you're making a lot more horsepower than I think you are !!
