I wanted a place that would not "cook" the fuel. A frig sounds great, except when it is 100 degrees outside.

In the summer my barn is wide open. No stagnating air or tightly sealed area (frig?) that will allow the air temp to rise and "age" the fuel faster.

With a 70 hp Tractor why are you using plastic "cans" for your Diesel. I had a 53 hp tractor and picked up a 50 gal transfer tank at the TSC with a hand fuel pump. When the fuel ran low I would just load the tank into the pick-up bed, go to the fuel Distributer and get the tank filled, brng it home use the FEL and unload it. Turning the crank was a bunch easier than lifting those yellow "cans". Also if I needed to carry the tank to the farm I just loaded it in the truck and away I went. Now that there is 100 hp tractor (approx. 4 - 5 gal/hr) on the way, I plan to get a larger tank with perhaps a battery powered pump, installed at the farm by the fuel distributer to support that tractor but I will retain the 50 gal here for refills and topping off locally! Just my $.02 ....

Another good thing to insure is that there are no electrical sparks inside the building, which could come from a water pump switch or some other electrical device.

Gasoline vapors could come not primarily from a storage tank or can, but rather from a leaky carb or gasoline fuel tank valve on a power washer, week wacker, motorcycle, tractor, ATV, etc. and ingnite violently in an enclosed space.

We dont have a garage at the "new" house. At the old city house we did. I would only buy one gallon of gas at a time and it got left under a cooler next to a fence on the north side of the house. As far from the house as I could.

Why?

A guy had used his weed wacker, finished wacking, and put the tool up in the garage. The tank leaked gas. Gas evaporated. Vapor found a spark. Said Weed Wacker Man no long had a weed wacker or a house.

Ever since I saw that report, the gas can would stay away from the house. I alway kept the Stihls empty and level. The Weed Wacker man did not.

Currently our barn is the 26'x8'x8' box from a truck. On the north side of the barn I keep two PU boxes with the usual icky chemicals that one usually finds in a garage. I know buy 2 gallons of gas at a time for the DR. The gas can stays on the north side of the barn or under a tarp out of the sun. The barn is a good 100 feet away from the house.

Most people who heat with oil have a 250 gallon oil tank in the basement... full most of the time. No issues.

Good idea. I don't have a pickup. 5 gallon cans are easy enough for me to handle. Someday, when I get a pickup, I will follow your advice.
