How many folks put signs on their barns or other storage areas that contain fuel?

If you don't, why not?

Why would you want to tell the thieves where your diesel fuel is ?????????????????????????

I didn't have a choice... the local Fire Inspector told me it was a compliance issue and I also had to buy the triangle/number hazard label pertaining to Diesel.

Well, I guess once the thieves take the fuel that eliminates the fire hazard since the diesel's no longer there.

That sounds very odd if you are a homeowner; maybe reasonable if you are a business. Many, many homes have fuel oil tanks inside (pretty much the same stuff, if not exactly the same) and you never see placards on houses.

For what it's worth the NFPA 704 rating is 1 for health and 2 for flammability.

I don't have any markings on my tank. I may write "diesel fuel" on it at some point but it's not necessary.

1*Try nuts
2*Risk of theft is why I put mine inside so I'll be danged if I'm gonna hang a billboard on it for the thieves.

Lots of things changed after the Oakland Hills Firestorm... The Fire was started by a transient BBQ and the Fire Department responded and thought they had put it out... only for it to flare up in the hot dry winds and destroy 3000+ dwellings.

Every Hill Homeowner is now assessed $65 fee per year to pay for an on site Fire Inspection... The inspector had me label the tank diamonds 0 2 0...

I've learned it is often the best course to go along to get along... My neighbor has 120 gallons of Diesel in his Dodge Ram Truck... but my stationary, double containment tank with leak alarm has to be inspected...

The city requires 100 feet of defensible space even though homes are often no more than 10 feet apart... also, city owned property seems to have a different standard... I have originally failed several inspections due to not maintaining the 100' only to have the senior inspector come out and tell me to cut the land... no disc or dozing... and then I point out the land is city owned and not mine.

1*Is the tank in side or out side?2* defensible space;what's that mean?3*How do you establish 100 feet between 2 houses spaced 10 feet apart.4*What is cutting the land??

The tank is part of my Onan Genset... the entire unit is skid mounted with the tank used as the base... If I had it to do over again, I would either buy the trailer kit or mount the unit on a trailer so that it would be mobile as opposed to permanently attached to my property.

Defensible Space is something the city adopted for homes in Urban/Wildland Interface areas... the code is much more applicable to rural areas with acrerage... Two key points are all trees must be limbed from the ground to 6' and all ground cover vegetation cannot exceed 6" in height... there are exceptions for specimen trees and maintained landscaping... although this is now a problem with mandatory water rationing and maintaining lawn.

Other items are just common sense such as spark arrestors for equipment and chimneys, house numbers visable from the street and no vegetation overhanging structures

Parcels less than 1/2 acre must be cleared and parcels over 1/2 acre require a perimeter fire break of 100' and 100' around structures.

No way to clear 100' in the city when houses are 10' apart...

Discing or Tilling is no longer allowed for sloping lots... which covers everyone I know... the requirement is to mow or cut vegetation to leave the root structure intact.

Most of us spend a number of days each spring with week trimmers cutting the hillside...

A number of fires have been started by folks doing city mandated weed abatement... and some homes have been lost.
