Fuel tank(s) phantom

The rep just wrote back that 10 ohms is full, 150 is MT. Go figure, huh?

He thinks my overturn might have bounced the sending unit in the lower tank, says take it out and look at it first, replace if necs.

I did run my fuel down a little more that usual on Sunday while baling and definitely showed more capacity than I expected after the gauge showed MT, so this may really just be a gauge problem.

The important lesson in this for me may be a reminder that there is no substitute for using careful observations and scientific methodology on problem solving. IE, what I should do is record the hours it takes to use 5 gals (about the amount used from half full reading--the max I get now--to MT), then keep on going for a few tense machine hours and fill again to see if I get significantly into the capacity that should be in that lower tank without running out.

I may have let perception (that the time I ran out, I was only a bit past the time at which the gauge showed MT) override reality.

I'll let you know, and thanks!

Hopefully your sending unit in the lower tank is just 'stuck' or something.

Let us know what you find out!

PERFECT FIX...

Just use an ohmeter for a fuel gauge. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Duct tape a Fluke to your dash... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How'd he know that (that I had a Fluke) /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif?

But my 87 is staying in my truck, not my tractor /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

And BTW, I've got to pull a wheel to get that sender out.

Because, That's what I've got (at least THE main one anyway). /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I guess Radio Shack would be better on the tractor /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Who said he wouldn't come back!

Found the culprit, growl. See attached pic of FLOAT as it looked when I pulled it out with the sender unit. Diesel-logged! It has a crack where the wire piece from the sender holds it. So, full of fuel, it stays down on the bottom, lying to the main sensor that the aux tank is MT!

I wrapped it with pink plumbers teflon tape and put it back in for now since I had no replacement. For now the gauge reads correctly /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif!

Per the parts book, that float is NOT available separately, so I may have to fashion a home-brew replacement (fishing related? but would it survive diesel immersion long-term, etc?).

Any suggestions always welcome!

Jim
