Oil & Fuel Fuel Transfer Strategies

( I called a local tank supply company - their price for a 275 gallon tank, legs, vent, level gauge is $340. I'd have to pick it up and put the parts together myself. My question is - how can this be $470 less than my oil company? Aren't all 275 gallon oil tanks about the same? Was my oil company sticking it to me? Or should I be suspicious of the $340 product?

These prices are without a pump.. )

Steve, that is closer to what I paid. I think I paid around $400 for the tank and stand with vented cap, cut-off valve, filter holder, filter, hose and delivery valve. If it is on a stand, you don't need a pump. My gravity feed will fill my 10 gallon tank in just a couple minutes.

I have one I got from them for around $20 (right before it went on sale /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) I use it in a 55 gallon drum I use to store waste oil that I burn to heat my shed .... works just dandy. )

Can you use the tractor hydro fluid for the shed heater?

Wow, you guys use a lot more fuel than I do. I just use a yellow diesal container and a hand pump/ gravity feed rig I got at Walmart. It's called Flo-n-go LE (large engine). Kind of neat for less that $20. I just hoist the container into the driver's seat and a few squeezes on the handle and the siphoning begins. Not the fastest way to fill a tank, that's for sure. But on the other hand it put an end to fuel spills and the mess. Not to mention I don't have to hold the contanier up high anymore. I'm sure if I could place the container higher it would flow better. But hey, I can't complain. I'm lucky if the wife let's me stay on the tractor long enough to go through a tank of fuel anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I got a 35 gal desiel fuel tank from an old dump truck plumbed in a filter a rubber line on the outlet side an a ball value and air hose quick chuck in old drain plugs.
I use the loader to put it in the trailor or go to the fuel station.
To fill the tractor just hook the air comp to it with 5 to 8 lbs pressure.

I was talking about doing something similar to this.
Read my post in this thread.

I bought a 275 Gal tank from home depot for under $300, then added the filler gauge, vent, and a drain cock. Total was probably $350. Then I added a 110V Fillrite pump and use it for my Jetta. I think the pump was under $200, but I'm not certain.

At my farm I use a 55gal drum and hand pump for the tractor, and another 30 gal tank for transporting fuel from the filling pump back to my place. The 30 gal drum fits upright in the back of my pathfinder, and can be moved in the loader then lowered to the ground when full. I then pump the fuel from the 30 gal drum to the 55. I'd just use the 55 gal drum if it fit in the car, but it doesn't.

Ditto Hayden. I used to use a 30 gal. poly drum and handpump. ...mounted the drum in a pallet and took it to local oil co every couple of months in back of my truck to get off road diesel. Used to take about 10 min to top off the tractor after a day of work (had to keep going to tractor to check on how full it was.)

Then I got lazy, build a setup much like yours w/275 gal oil tank, guage, draincock and electric Fillrite pump w/autonozzle. Design from here courtesy of Pineridge. Now oil co drops 150 gal twice a year (summer and winter diesel) w/out delivery charge and it takes me less than a minute to top off. I use the 30 gal tank for kerosene for the torpedo heater that heats the barn when I am working in it in Winter.

Definitely the way to go. ...no more horsing with 5 gal cans. Using off-road will save enough to pay for the fueling setup inabout 3 years.

I have a gas caddy w. rotary pump and changed out the nozzle for one that shuts off auto ...just like the gas station ...solved the problem of trying to be in two places at one time ...

The caddy's are prominently labeled about not being filled in or on a vehicle ...I actually fill mine from 6gal fuel bottles (JEGS), which I can also use on the hood of my tractor with a siphon, if I am away from the caddy ...

incidentally, the reason I use the caddy, even though I fill it from jugs is to take advantage of the water block filter on my pump ...

and, diesel in a 275 gal tank will keep for a long, long time ...not an oxidation problem as with gasoline ...although a biocide makes sense because of a potential algae problem ...and, even if there is condensation in the tank keeping the pump inlet a little off the bottom solves a lot of the water problem, as does the water block filter ... I have a diesel family that includes 2 MBs of varying vintages, a diesel suburban, a diesel Isuzu I-mark, a VW jetta TDI, and an F-350 superduty, in addition to my Kubota, so I have had some experience in storing and filling ...

The real drawback to a big tank is the potential for a big spill ...you don't want to become a superfund site. I try to be extra careful when filling, not so much to avoid getting fuel on the tractor, but to avoid putting some in the Shenandoah river, little by little.

I haven't read every post to this thread so I'm not sure if this option has been mentioned for those of us that only use a couple of 5's.

The Han-D-Pump Fuel Nozzle Kit, Model# HP009, Item# 169471 for under $20 from Northern Tool.

I used ity today for the 1st time and it worked great. Eliminates trying to find the right angle to pour without spilling and saves on the back. Will probably get another for my gasoline useage.

Interesting. I have used the Han-D-pump and found it laborious, slow, and prone to making a mess when it leaks. Maybe I got a defective one, though.
