JD 3020
3020 JD will not start unless throttle is open alot more than normal, a few days ago would not run under 1000 rpm yesterday had it out an sat an run fine at 500rpm some say injection ,others may be injectors,Ihave very little experince with diesel?? 3020jeh

Sounds as if drive coupler or governor in inj pump is failing. Injectors won't cause that type problem.

Older diesels needed up to 1/2 throttle to start when cold. This was the case on our 220D, 240D Benzes and JD 4010. Then they needed to run at around 1,500 rpm to get all the cylinders warmed enough to start running normally after a couple minutes.

This newer JD 1025R's throttle is set for about 1,500 rpm. It starts without advancing the throttle more.

My Isuzu diesel generator that is probably about 20 hp (12.5 kw) starts essentially like a gasoline engine, as does our VW TDI. Neither one has a cold engine clatter.

I'd put a new fuel filter in it, bleed the line air out of the system properly, and see what happens. At the very least it won't make things any worse!

Welcome to TBN!

This may be a long shot, but is this behavior temp related? As in fuel gelling?
Up here that would be the first thing we'd check if these symptoms appeared in the winter.
Just saying.

My tractor needs the throttle bumped up some now also. Heated garage, fresh treated fuel and 6 mo old filters. Hmmm.

Older diesels needed up to 1/2 throttle to start when cold. Ralph

My '91 JD 4255 with nearly 11,000 on engine & inj pump and my Ford 6700 with 12,525 hrs start just fine at idle rpm's(800)
