Actually - when/if it ever does get that cold ( -20F ) I have no reason to be outside. I'm retired and have no need to be plowing snow at those temps. I have no livestock to feed. A big mug of hot chocolate, laced with Jack Daniels - look out the bay windows at the frozen wonderland.

I'm also retired supposedly, now I'm over to the farm more then before, the worse the weather the more I rely on my tractors and trucks to start and be able to work.
Thats also when it's most likely to be power outages and it seems like more stuff breaks down and needs help then.
Although it's rare fortunately I have seen -40F here and -30'sF quite often my stuff has to be able to start in those times.

Hmmm....... Lou, sounds like you are kept pretty busy - "in retirement". I've been in -30 to -40, but not around here. Unfortunately - we would get days unending of those temperatures when we were in Glennallen, AK. Nothing less fun than having to start a vehicle and operate it at those temps. Many the time - get the vehicle going - jump in to go - the vinyl seat is rock hard & cold as a block of ice. We would put a wool blanket in the dryer - fold into a square - put on the vinyl seat. Winter in Glennallen was just not a time for great projects.

If it's one that parked close to the house the block heaters have been on for a few hours,
step out and get it started, watch for a few seconds and back in a drink another cup of coffee,
unless it's some danged thing like a power outage or a call at midnight that a car has taken out a fence or some other dang fool thing.
Then it's out get it started back in and finish dressing and on the way.
