It wasn't a joke Harv, I know a guy named Skip down there. His brother sounded a lot like you, but I couldn't remember his name. I figured it couldn't be you but just thought I would ckeck.

Sorry, I've been AWOL for a few days. Yes you can cut with rods by cranking the heat up to the maximum, superheating the piece you are cutting, then using the rod to push the melted metal out of the way.

As Harv said it produces a pretty ragged cut most of the time but as with anything else practice helps. There are also rods made especially for cutting but I've found the old trusty 6011s work almost as well.
