Hi, I am new to this forum, my name is Tim Tenold and I live in Northern California. We just aquired a 1988(?) Yanmar Fx265D 4wd tractor with a loader and scraper box. My problem is the automatic trans won't engage unless the engine rpms are around 2600 and then only creeps along. The loader, 3 point and pto seem to work fine, and the manual gears seem to shift ok with the clutch . I have cleaned the screen (wasn't dirty) and changed the trans fluid (NAPA premium Tractor Fluid) and spin on filter with out any change. I can't find a repair manual as of yet. Does anyone have any ideas? or can you identify which pressure ports to use to check the trans pump? Thanks in advance for any help.

There isn't an English service manual for your tractor. I'd recommend getting a YM336 manual. It should help you diagnose it. Could be valves or clutches.

I hope its not the ring & pinion gear in the rear end. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
That can be a pain to find new ones.

Follow up to my post: Everyone told me that it had to be the clutch because the powershift trans never gave any problems. Anyway, I split the tractor and found the clutch to be practically new. As the FEL and 3point worked fine, and there wasn't any debris in the screen or filter, I figured it had to be a pressure problem. I had a photocopied Japanese language parts book for a F26d-F28d so I tried pulling what appeared to be a main pressure regulator valve, and upon dissasembly I found a broken spring. I found a similar spring at Ace hardware, reassembled everything, and everything seems to work fine. Practically no dissasembly and 40 cents worth of parts. Please e-mail me if you want more details.

I have an FX24-D tractor here that behaved the same way as you described so I took it apart and discovered a bad ring & pinion gear (not fun) Im thinking of just parting it out for parts now.

Ernie,
While it might be more financially advantageous in the short term to part the tractor out, long term we need to get someone up and going on aftermarket replacements for those gears. This appears to be a VERY common problem with the F series tractors of that size. When I was searching for gears for the front axle of my YM1110D, I found that I could have gears made by a number of different shops. The first gear is really expensive due to set-up time (creating the "program") for making it. After that, they are reasonable because the computerized machines (CNC) just load in the program to make another.

Fredericks is working on that as we speak.
