G1800 belt problem

Phil, I'm thrilled that I could help a little. Everytime I help somebody, I learn a little more about these lawn tractors. If mine ever starts throwing belts, I'll check the springs as you did. Enjoy your mowing. I sure like my G1800, and I hope yours continues to perform well for you.

Hi guys, when replacing the front PTO belts, are you supposed to take off the pulley to get them on? If so how do you stop the pulley from turning when trying to undo the retaining bolts? Cheers

No, the pulley does not come off. The Maintenance Manual says to remove the three springs (tension, return, brake) and the plate type belt stay from the bottom of the pulley. Next, loosen the locknut and remove the belt retaining bolt on the left side of the pulleys. Now, you should be able to work the belts off.

After you install new belts, you will have to do tension adjustments:

With the PTO disengaged...
Tension spring arm to tip of adjusting screw = 0.12" to 0.16"
Brake spring length = 5.44" to 5.59"

Be sure and secure the locking screws after the adjustments are done.

Cheers, Jim. I'll check it out today. Mine doesn't have a belt retaining bolt, I'll take more notice to see if there is a bolt hole.
I'll let you know how I get on.

It appears from your post and phrasing that I maybe should have included metric measurements. I just assumed inches would be what you need.

Thanks, metric or imperial are fine (England). Anyhow, I've got the new belts on with a bit of persuasion. Knowing that they would go on without removing the pulley helped the determination! There is a bolt hole next to the belts but no bolt, seems to run fine without it. There is an 'L' piece of metal just above that looks like it serves the same purpose that ever so slightly touches the belts as they are running. As there is no tension adjustment and the bracket is fixed and not damaged I guess this is normal. Many thanks for your advice.
Simon.

I know this is an old thread. My dad has the kubota g1800-s mower and the PTO belts broke. I have been attempting to locate a part number for the belts but have been unsuccessful. The owner's manual looks to be for the wrong tractor/mower and does not have the belts listed. Any help would be appreciated.
