Look at this link for a NAPA auto parts part number of a momentary contact switch and an electrical schematic showing how I wired it. Also, this link shows a picture of the switch installed.

Thank you! Those are easy to follow instructions.

I've not familiarized myself with the switch you're using so am curious about how you get the engine to stop once you're finished using it.

Thanks again,
Pete

Pete, my G1800 has a STOP knob just below my momentary start switch in the photo. I don't have the shutoff solenoid anymore. Pulling this knob will kill the engine with the key turned On or Off.

From my experimentation, I found the key switch drops over a volt when it is old and dirty (series resistance of dirty contacts). If it puts out 10.8 volts or less, the starter would not operate. Only when the battery had a fresh charge or was putting out peak voltage was it enough to get the solenoid energized and start the engine through the switch. My jumper puts full power to the starter solenoid without having the switch or combination box in the circuit. The only downside to my switch is if it ever welds its contacts together, the starter will run and not stop until I break the connection. Having a 15 amp switch from NAPA should ensure this doesn't happen, but I'm always aware that it could conceivably happen.

This is my experience with my G1800 overheating:

I was mulching some piles of leaves and began to see steam coming from near the radiator along with some water. I immediately stopped mulching and ran the machine back to the garage. After things cooled I raised the hood and prepared to remove the radiator (thinking it had a leak). While doing this I had to remove the fan belt and adjust the generator and "whoa nellie", the fan belt was broken so no air was moving across the radiator as supposed to be. Tried turning the pulley on the generator and there was the explanation-- the bearings in the generator were frozen/locked/worn out so the fan belt wouldn't turn the generator and the fan belt eventually wore through/melted/broke thus causing the overheating. Went to the bearing store and got a new set of bearings, pressed out the old ones and pressed in the new ones with my bench vise and it was good to go. While the generator was dismantled I cleaned up the commutator and grooves and the brushes and all worked as new again:D.

Once again my jumping-to-conclusion exceeded my use of step-by-step logic:eek:. Lesson learned:laughing:.

I don't have a camera to take a picture but since you know where the positive terminal on the starter is I will go from there. If you look at the left hand side end of the starter you will see a small wire plugging into the starter. It is just a plain spade connector and will unplug by pulling it straight back off the male end of the spade connector. Make a jumper cable by putting a female spade connector on a piece of wire and remove the insulation from the other end. My jumper is just a wire I removed from an old appliance and has a spade connector on each end. Plug this jumper cable into the same place where you removed the wire and leave the other free. Go through the same procedure as normal for starting your tractor by turning the key to heat the glow plugs. As soon as the glow plug light goes out release the key allowing it to go back to the run position and touch the free end of your jumper wire to the positive terminal on the starter. You may see a little spark but as soon as you touch it to the terminal the starter will engage. As soon as it is running remove your jumper wire and plug the original wire back on the terminal. Don't be surprised if it works normal of the key for awhile after jumping it.

By jumping it this way you are by passing all safety switches so make sure mower is not engaged and the hydro pedal in the neutral position. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have the brake locked on but I would admit I don't do this.

If this sounds difficult it isn't. It is really quite simple

Worked like a champ! There was definitely some sparks flying!

I think my combo box is bad. I just put a brand new shut off solenoid on and it seems like the key isn't getting things to respond. Can't start it with a key and can't shut it off with a key.
