Gantry for Barn

Thank you all for allowing me to highjack this thread. You have just convinced me that my hoist must be portable (and manageable weight wise).

I think I'll do a 11' span (I have a 10' wide trailer that I'd love to be able to fit in the middle). It'll also be 11.5' tall to get max height out of my 12' ceilings :)

I'm done threadjacking now.... Thanks for all the incredible info. This site never ceases to amaze me.

The maximum safe load a W14x22 can support over a laterally unsupported span of 21'-0" is 2500 lbs. Allowing the required 25% impact allowance for overhead lifting, the W12x22 bridge would be rated at 2000lbs, including the weight of any rigging, hoist, and trolley.

Very nice work. For safety sake, when you are done, do a load test. Easy to do, center the whole thing with the trolly in the center of the beam. Rent a load cell if you don't have access. Load to 125% of what you are going to rate this thing to lift. Generaly chain falls will do this, 25% above their rateing. You'll thank yourself not having to ever wonder if something might ever come down at a bad time. Use a tractor or anything else that is properly rigged for a dead man between the load cell and the chain fall. Stay well clear during the test, leave the load suspended at 125% for at least 15 min. Your work looks good and more than stout enough, but I've had the misfortune to witness some bad accidents with this stuff, test is good insurance.

Been there and did that. Required testing was same load any place and every place on the overhead crane. 10-20 ton crane in most places. Was required to be tested before it was accepted for first use. Have someone who has been checked out by some company such as Crane Pro do your testing and you might save some on insurance too. I had to be tested for inspection of cranes and hoists for my job. The class, if you can get into one, takes a day but is well spent. Crane Pro Parts - About Us

Bringing this old thread back to life. I am about ready to dive into my Gantry crane, but I need help.

I'm going with either 11' or 12' wide, and hope to be able to hoist at least 1,000 lbs. Does anyone know what size of I-Beam I need to get?

Also - I know where there is some 8"x8"x1/8" wall box tubing. Would that be too light for the vertical supports of the crane?

I'm thinking 11.5' overall height. Would 8' wide legs (4' out each side) be enough, or should I go even wider?

thank you all again.

no prob. You should create a thread of your build. Might help others in the future:thumbsup:

Thanks. I may create a new thread, depending on the kind of steel I end up using :)

Unfortunately, I need it now, so it may be a mix-mash of steel. I'll be safe, but may not be pretty :)

I spoke with a Civil Engineer friend of mine. He said that to lift 1,000 lbs, spanning 10', I should be safe with 6"W or S I-beam, depending on the webbing.

It has been indispensable for me to move and organize my attachments by myself. I can lift up the attachment and place car 展heel Dollies or similar load bearing dollies on wheels underneath them and then move them around in a large game of Tetris in my shed. I got a 4ooolb rated gantry that is height adjustable but went with 2000lb rated chain hoist, so there痴 the limit. I also found having a 3 ton quick lift hydraulic jack, can help similarly for placement of wheel dollies under attachments. The gantry was indispensable to disconnect and connect that PTO auger attachment. I can move this whole gantry and attachment (still chained but weight resting on wheel dollie) over to a shed structural beam and strap the auger to the beam as those attachments are a bear to handle (and dangerous).
