Garage door size ?

I am having a garage/apartment (garage 1st floor, apartment second) constructed - foundation and first floor walls already up. My 3410 ROPS is about 8', and having taken such up and down a few times, I decided to design the garage with 9' high by 10' wide doors, and a 10.5' ceiling. I will have 2 bays, 1 for the tractor, and the other for a boat/trailer (8' wide).
It was certainly a luxury to be able to build around stuff I already had (e.g., a tractor - if I didn't have one, I'd have built the standard 7-8' high garage doors, and then cried when I finally got a tractor and tried to drive it into the garage). The apartment on a second floor was an afterthought, prompted by someone on this forum about 6 months ago, who talked about wanting to watch and supervise the construction of their retirement house as it was being built, so they were living in the single large room tractor shed (converted to a temporary house). I want to do the same, skipping the tractor shed for a second floor efficiency over my tractor/boat garage.
Whoever wrote that "living in a tractor shed" post - thanks for the idea, really.

i had a nice 3 car garage built a few years ago(4) nice and big extra wide doors, never thought about the height., so just had 7 ft installed. everthing goes in ok but if i was to do it over i would spend a few $$$ and have the garage built to at leat take 8ft or better yet 9ft doors, don't cost that much to go up in height. color me dumb /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had a 24x30 foot garage built this fall to house my toys. I have inside walls 10 feet high to the trusses to permit instalation of an auto lift (next summer's project). The door is 16'x 8' (an available standard dimension overhead door) located on the 24' end with a standard passenger door on the 30' side nearest the house.
The 8' door height allows easy passage of my JD 4200 with folding ROPS up. An 8'6' door would have been a special order. I had looked at a shed with a wood floor but found by shopping around I could get over twice the space with a cement floor and a 16x8 door custom built for not all that much over the cost of the pre fabricated shed including site preparation. I suggest that you shop around a bit for custom garages before committing to a pre-fab. The prices from various builders in this area ranged from $26K to $15K depending on how hungry the builder was for work.

I have seen there products and they are first class all the way.. They are expensive, but they do build a quality product.
Thanks bebster for the web site ! I'm going to give them a call. I've decided to go with a pole barn, something with 9' high doors. From all of the discussions, It would be best to go with the higher doors, maybe even 10' and 9-10 wide. My problem is my patience is running thin. I'm finally finishing up a modular log cabin that was set last June. After begging the mason for months to pour the foundation and hounding the carpenter to finish the job, I'm worn out. The thought of going through it again this spring is making me crazy. My initial thought was a pre-built shed, done and finished in one day, great. Now, I think I need a builder who specializes in building barns, concrete floor and all, who is aggresive and can bang it out in a week.
To all who said something about leaving the ROPS down or up and down, I just bought my Kioti CK20HST and didn't realize the ROPS would fold back and down so I thought I would have to raise the roof on my shed. Then realized I could put the ROPS up and down and started doing that. Then I was just leaving it down for a couple of days and realized, dumb thing to do, so put it back up and promptly forgot when I was finished for the day. Needless to say, I headed into the shed and when the ROPS first contacted the roof, something fell on my head and I pressed harder on the forward foot pedal and REALLY tore it up. A lot of the wood was rotten and I was going to repair it, but just not now. All this to just say: Build a high opening and give it some width too not matter what type building you go with. Anyone have some time off? LOL John

Don't feel bad I think if everyone is perfectly honest it has happened to many of us including me when I dinged up my garager door threshold opening as well as doing minor damage of the opener I was able to fix with not to much problem the worst part was the peircing beams of my wife's eyes when she saw what I had done. I later built a 12 X 16 shed with a modified garage door opening to accomodate my tractor with the ROBs up I have about 2 inches of clearence.
