Garage Lighting

I have your basic poorly lit garage with a few sporadic sockets (11' ceiling), I've been wondering if these are worthwhile.

Anybody tried these?

See my post #4 above for what two 5,000 lumen fixtures do for a dingy barn stall. I'm guessing one of those Amazon units overhead at each end of your garage ceiling would be fine. Under $50 for two is great. 6,000+ K color is a little harsh, that's utility lighting not living room lighting. I would do it.

My garage is 30' x 40'. For 25 years it had been lit (dimly) by 6 incandescent light bulbs so whenever I had a project going I always had to set up auxiliary lighting to see what I was doing. Now that I'm retired and have a lot more time to spend in the garage, a year ago I decided to do something about the lighting situation. After reading some reviews I ended up buying 2 sets (12 lights) of these from Amazon:

Probably the best upgrade I've ever done to the old garage. I ran the lights along the bottom of the trusses and connected them directly to the wiring that used to control the incandescent lights. It is bright as day inside the garage now when I flip the switch!
No problems to report for the year I've been using these.

I've about 2500 sq ft of "shops" in Mississippi. All were lit by 8' (and a few 4') old fluorescent in 2011, about 50 fixtures. Most of them had dying ballasts and single prong bulbs and had been wired in with conduit. Most were ganged together so in one room (even 40'x40') they all worked off one switch.


About 2014 I started replacing the dead ballast fixtures with the new fangled LED's and taking out the ballasts. That worked great but got old quick with 12' and 14' ceilings. Then "cheap" linkable 4' LED fixtures started showing up at $15@ and since then I've been using whatever works.

I usually wait for a sale on Amazon or a big box hardware store (like these 8 lights for $66).

I like the 4' long ones because they don't weigh much and are easy to maneuver when I'm working 10' up.

I've been tooting the horn for Costco lights when they drop below $20ea a couple maybe three times a year. I also have a bunch (I think eleven) in my two car detached shop and all controlled on a remote switch. Super bright and I can click on the 5 different zones individually if I want. Even better if I am done for the night and I am in my house I have a second remote to shut the lights down.

I was not aware that I could get LED tubes until a day or so ago when my eight foot shop light went out. Having just mounted a four foot LED fixture on my work bench, I got to looking into what was available. I picked up two LED's today at a local electrical shop. Took like ten minutes total to remove the ballast and rewire the fixture. Totally impressed with the results!

I have 10, 5,000 lumen in my 32'X40' shop. With the garage door up on a sunny day, it will literally be brighter in the shop, that outside, right at the door. .

Good to know. I am building a 30x40 barn this Spring and bought 10 5,000 lumen LED lights for it. Was wondering if 10 would be enough.

depends on height, wall finish floor finish and what your doing in building. My 30x60 barn has 5 of the 8 foot HO fluorescents....lots of light. My 30x40 shop has 8 - 8 foot now LED lights. Very bright.

Cheap HF 4 footers. work good and way more light and no flickering when cold. I've been pulling down 8 ft fixtures, adding an outlet and plugging two in. linkable would be good, but these are fine.
