Garden Fence Project

Thought I would show what the SFO and I have been up to this week, she got her "high end: garden fence. Basically pressure treated 2x4 and 4x4 posts with 4.5ft X8 ft galvanized 4 gauge cattle fence (from 4.5 ft x 16ft panels). We got our ebay turnbuckles and aircraft wire and will put up two top wires per the neigbors deer instructions.

Only downside is that the bottom 2x4 sags so we will be attaching it to the cattle wire (probably a lockscrew).

All in under 1500 so not too bad for 24X60 layout. I wish it had been for free but never that lucky.

Looks good! I just went through the same thing (re-located our garden) I was able to re-use most of the old fence and post, but it did make it more difficult (different slopes). Our garden slopes probably about as much as yours looks to, so I started a retaining wall at the low end made from RR ties.

Great looking fence! I'd like to do something like that, but don't have raised beds and would like to get my tractor in and out to rototill. Haven't squared up in my mind how to have good tilling access (with room to turn around etc) and a nice permanent fence like you built! Good job! :thumbsup:

Looks nice.

We did the same thing around both of our gardens (mainly for the dogs) and built a dog run as well using the same method (except I used 2x6s instead of 2x4s). If you use fence stables to connect the panel at strategic points to the PT lumber, it keeps the PT from warping (as much) and helps with the stability of the entire structure.

The 2x4 on top of the cattle panels really helps it look "finished." Great place to rest a coffee cup too! Nice job.

I will get a closeup, but we dado'd the posts and the header and footer boards so the wire fence rides inside. I have two trashcans full of sawdust from that experience.

That fence looks really pretty Woodlandfarms, I'm curious what you are keeping out though. In my past gardens the main pests have been deer and rabbits. It looks like rabbits can go under or through your fence, and deer over it. No disrespect intended at all, I really like the clean look of it!

My garden pest problems are turkeys, snowshoe hares, deer, raccoons, and moose.
The turkeys like to take dust baths in the dirt and tear up the plants flopping and scratching in there.
The bunnies and deer just chow down on everything.
The raccoons are the ban of any corn.
The moose are just random. They'll take a bite of this or that, but end up stomping on more than they eat.
No bear problems....yet.

Doc, if and when you do have a "bear problem" I'd like to see the fence you put up to stop them Mine field comes to mind:laughing:
