No, you have to take a left. I can't remember what street, when I buy the mower if he still has it I'll have to get directions again, I can't find my way back nowhere unless I've been there 5 times in a month. :(

I'm trying to get the county to improve the road shoulder in front of my place so I CAN mow it. They are supposed to cut it but it doesn't even happen once a year. I either have to let it grow up and look like crap or do it with a weed eater.

When I first bought this place, my yard went straight to the road and the road was about 6" lower than the yard. The county decided a culvert needed to be put across the road because the runoff from the other side often cut the road a little. But they didn't dig in a culvert, they laid a culvert across the road then built up the road about 3'.......and no shoulder was put in.

So now my yard goes to the road but goes almost vertical for about 3' feet at the road. The weeds grow up bad on that area and around the culvert that they put in. Then there is all the rocks that get thrown off the road into the yard for me to hit with my mower when I don't see them.

Oh yuck! That sounds like a nightmare.

Our yard is at the intersection of two roads, with a ditch on each road, and we have 2.5 acres.. roughly in a square. Which means a LOT of weedwacking if we end up doing it that way. I haven't decided yet. A couple of options seem possible. One is some kind of weed killer.. but we have cats, kids, and veggie gardens. The other is to plant something that looks okay, takes over that whole area, and it tough enough to not need any care. You know how sometimes beside country roads you see some really pretty wild plants, flowers, etc.? That's what I'm thinking of.. but have no idea what they are, how to get some, etc.

Maybe this would work for you too?

Any suggestions welcome! This really isn't fun right now. In fact, it's a considerable source of stress for us. Our neighbors have no ditch, and their lawn looks like a golf course. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif We don't want to get compulsive about this, but would like to have the area look at least halfway decent.

A good ground cover is exactly what it needs but I think it needs shoulders first.

While it hasn't happened yet, sooner or later two cars are going to pass each other at this spot and the one on my side of the road is going to go off the road and roll. There is little danger to me since my house is well set back from the road but I really fear the someone is going to get killed in a slow roll over right there. And it will probably be some kid that has been partying half the night at the public boat ramp about 2 miles from me. They get about half lit up there then take the backroads back to town to avoid the law.

Yeah, I'm worried about the same thing. Although in my case, it's usually a case of someone backing out and missing the driveway and ending up stuck. But we have had a couple of close calls when someone behind us tried to pass us as we were turning into our driveway, and there was a car coming.

We also have a bunch of 10 MPH turns near us, and, unlike the usual case, they actual mean it! Most corners with speed warning signs are ridiculous.. they say 25 mph and it's safe to take them at double that. Well, these corners are really 10 mph maximum. We've had more than one teenager end up in the ditch after fishtailing a ways down the road. It's only a matter of time before someone gets killed.

We are considering asking the town to put in a stop sign at our corner.. with kids, cats, etc., it would be better than having people roar by at 70 (in a 55 zone.)

If you have even one accident of the sort you describe, I'll bet you could pressure the town into doing something. That just sounds downright dangerous. Do they at least have "No Shoulder" signs to warn people?

I use to load and unload my little Case without ramps by backing up to one of the hills and drive it on and off.
What was really nice there was nearly no drop off. The only problem was getting there and trying to align the trailer correctly.

About 12 to 15 years ago, a guy renting a property had an awful accident with a riding mower. The property owner was also the owner of the mower. The mower was in good condition, and the owner had the renter sign a release form before allowing the renter to use it.

The renter was giving his young son a ride while mowing the lawn. He ran into a picnic table and flipped the mower. The child lost a foot in the accident. The owner assisted with medical bills, even though it didn't appear he had any responsibility.

Forward to 2002. The kid is now making noises about a suit against the deceased owner's estate. His claim is that Dad didn't have the right to sign a release that affected his rights.

It is a real shame the accident happened, but it seems to me the kid should sue Dad. He's the one who rolled a perfectly good mower. Oh well, this is America, and it's 2002. What can we expect with examples being set like the infamous hot coffee in the lap suit, fat kids suing MickeyD's because Mom fed them that crap instead of cooking supper..............chim

Isn't it wonderful? I mean being in America in 2002. After all in other places you wouldn't even be allowed to consider suing anyone for anything.

That's one of the things about freedom. You ain't free if you ain't allowed to make bad decisions along with the good ones........harv

Harv, I wouldn't trade life in the USA for life anywhere else. I'd be willing to send 90% of the lawyers somewhere else though.

Anyone out there in a third-world country want to trade a camel or a yak for a boatload of lawyers?....................chim
