One tip that would probably help many gardeners and has been mentioned countless times on TBN, is a soil sample at least every few years. No point fighting mother nature more than you have to. Stronger, healthier plants resist bugs and infections better than weak plants. Cost is usually less than $25, which is cheaper than just "throwing out fertilizer" without knowing what your high or low in.
