Last year I tried something new in my garden. I planted rye as a winter cover crop. This past spring, I cut it off with my string trimmer and used it as a mulch for some of the plants in my garden.
Now I'm trying something new, dunno how it's going to work.
Saturday, I mowed off the corn, squash, cucumbers......everything except the tomatoes, peppers and brussel sprouts. I tilled it all up, added triple 14 fertilizer I had lying around, 2 bags of ag lime, tilled twice more then broadcast buckwheat onto the area. After the frost kills it, or after I cut it(if that becomes necessary) my plan is to use rye as a winter cover crop again.
Although, the best/worst part about using the rye, is that it will keep small seeds from germinating. Great for weed suppression, bad if one plans on planting seeds.
