Garlic from China. What gives?

We whinge and complain about this but how do you stop the 99% of our fellow countrymen from buying all the foriegn produce?

Australia has the same problem with imported goods. We complain about imported foods then in the next breath complain about the cost of local produce.

Companies employing locals to manufacture goods cannot compete so are forced to source the products overseas. We are our own worst enemy.

Sorry people NO COUNTRY can compete with a Country that pays their people $200.00 A MONTH, or used free prison labor. NO Country will ever be able to produce ANYTHING ever that can beat what China produces including shipping. I just checked on a 42013 Kawasaki Mule 4010 Trans 4x4 for $5000USD including shipping THAT'S DELIVERED to me for 5K from CHINA. Here that same unit tops out at 17K with tax etc.. In anyone's book 12K is a lot of saving. I doubt I could build it in my garage for 5K.
We can whine about it, complain, rant and rave but we will never ever defeat it as long a politicians do what they do and allow the EPA & LAWYERS to drive businesses out of business.
Why the Largest Maker of Portable Gas Cans is Going Out of Business | StateImpact Oklahoma

We have a Country that allows China to do what they do and at the same time ALLOWS EPA, LAWYERS, INSURANCE Companies to hurt businesses.

About like the CFL lightbulbs they want everybody to use, I bet 99% of the ones on the market today are made in China. Heck, our electric company sends me two free ones every six months or so for every light bill I pay (I've got four bills, so I get 8 bulbs a time, about 16 a year)

Reading through all the material sent with them, the majority of the cost is covered by a federal grant related to reducing energy costs, but every bulb they've sent me are made in China. In effect, the US government is subsidizing the manufacture of these bulbs in China.

It's hard to stop anyone from doing anything. You just one day wake up and say "I'm not buying garlic from China". Nope, nada, no dice. And that's how it happens.

I was reading this thread a few minutes ago and moved to another site. Like some others, I was inclined to blame all politicians for allowing their own countries' businesses fail. Then I saw that one poster, who calls himself Dr Stan and is from Owensboro, KY has this signature to his posts:-

"I have come to a resolution myself as I hope every good citizen will, never again to purchase any article of foreign manufacture which can be had of American make, be the difference of price what it may."

Thomas Jefferson 1815

So there have been some good politicians. On the other hand, I do believe that Jefferson was a collector and drinker of Madeira.

Edit: On reflection he did say "which can be had of American make" and of course Madeira cannot be made in America, so he cannot be condemned for drinking something that cannot be made in America.

Here is one more thing to think about, while we are worrying about the chemicals in Chinese food:

In the US, arsenic is not regulated. It is not considered a drug, but rather an element. Yes, it is an element, I am aware of that. As such, USDA and FDA do not regulate it. Why is that important? Because most of the chicken you eat, is loaded with arsenic. It is used to increase weight gain in the chickens, as anti-biotics are in cattle. Most of the chicken in the US (as well as the rice, for a different reason) is LOADED with more arsenic than is considered "safe". Pilgrim's Pride never used it, but now they are just called Pilgrim's, since Bo died, so no telling how long they will be safe. Tyson, and some of the others, such as Trader Joe's can be the worst at having high arsenic loads. I would love to see them have to put on the label that they do not feed arsenic or growth enhancing items to their chickens.

Our doctors want us to eat chicken and fish. Honestly, the arsenic in chicken, and the mercury in fish scares the cr*p out of me. Has anyone noticed the rise in childhood diseases, including autism lately? And then we compound the heavy metals in food, by giving the kids vaccines that are now almost limitless. The FDA and health departments state that there is "NO safe level of mercury. However, the vaccines are preserved with mercury. So, we add more heavy metals to our young (and elderly). In Texas, one of Perry's largest contributor is Merck (Merial) pharmaceuticals. Is it any wonder kids are supposed to get all of that companies vaccinations, before attending schools? Has anyone really studied the side effects of Guardasil? They aren't pretty. And yet, parents subject their children to it blindly, because a politician(s) mandated it, so doctors administer it.

As far as the food coming out of China, I say avoid it at all costs. The melamine in pet food, baby formula and wheat flour in 2007 should have taught everyone that lesson. But look in the stores and you will find pet treats made in China, and people still BUY them. :mur:

One other thing, just because a food says Made in USA, it can be from non-USA ingredients. Made in USA, just means it was processed and packaged here. If you look at a bag of pet food, you find a list of vitamins and minerals added in the ingredient lists. Want to guess where those ingredients come from? Yep, China! So, if the food was really good, it wouldn't need those vitamins and minerals added, but since it is deficient, they add them, and source them from China.

And all of this before we even get into GMO, etc.

Having healthy food means growing your own, or knowing someone locally where you can buy organic.

Sorry, this topic hits home to me in many ways, and because of those ways, I'll speak my mind about it, and try to share the truth as I research it and learn it.

I have not complained in years about the price of food. I also have learned that the body can adapt pretty well. I hadn't eaten at McDs in ~15 years. A couple of years ago, I was traveling late and McDs was my only option for dinner. It was late at night and I figured I'd eat some of their items which sounded heathly. The next day I felt terrible! I couldn't believe that people could actually eat it on a regular basis and live!

Adding to Farmgirl19's post;

Fluoride is derived from the process to make phosphate fertilizer. Countries like Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and Finland discontinued fluoridation, while France never even started. The exact reasons for the policy change depend on who you ask. It is a poison and is linked to many health issues including memory loss.

The U.S. government has been pumping fluoride into the water supply for decades, and telling people "it's good for you". Yeah right, you know what you call bad attorney? senator...

Well, lead is an element too. If they can regulate one, they can regulate the other. Doesn't need to be classified as a drug.

Read an article this morning that the Feds are investigating some coal companies that are shipping coal to China. I didn't know it, but we ship about 125 million tons a year over there.
Can't really blame the coal companies, it looks like the EPA is trying to put them out of business, we can't burn it here, so we send it to China, who has some of the worst air pollution in the world, so they can burn it over there.
