Gas Backup power didn't back us up!

I’m struggling with this one. Just so I’m clear on what you have, is the water heater a storage type or a demand type? The link for it leads me to believe it is a demand, AKA tankless, water heater and also the fact that you seemed to notice right away there wasn’t hot water which you wouldn’t if it were a storage, AKA tank-type water heater.

I have had LP in MI for 15 years and never had a regulator freeze. And that is with sub zero temps and a backup generator as well. Since the generator was not running on LP, I would suspect you are getting some voltage leaking to a ground or something like that.

Did you try it again? Turn off your main breaker and see if it still does it. If the hot water heater is old school and no power, it should run without even starting the generator. So try the hot water heater with power out and no generator then start the generator and see what happens.

Best way to determine if you have an issue or are just going crazy!! haha. Better now then next power outage.

It almost sounds like you have a electric valve on your gas line but never seen that in real life.

. As somebody mentioned the first day as well as in the post just above mine, the thing to do is throw the transfer switch and run it off the generator to try to replicate the problem. If so, it might be time to call an electrician; while he’s getting some good and not so good suggestions internet diagnoses can only do so much.

The regulator did not freeze up. The regulator is stupid. It doesn't know the electricity is off...……

The "generated" power didn't provide the appropriate ground to the systems that wouldn't fire up. As stated several times above, replicate the scenario and chase the problem on a nice day when you have power to fall back on rather than waiting for the next power outage.
