I especially like it because we are on all sand with a shallow aquifer which provides out water, so have never been a fan of pour gas or oil around.

If you put the oil or diesel on a "wick" and limit how much accelerant you use (we use a flake of hay in each spot and dump about a cup of oil on it), it will never hit the ground and even if it does, the fire with get hot though to burn it up.

Just another true story. But first, "Thanks CM" for this reminder post and the other posters.

As a young man, new home owner, we used to burn our household trash in 55 gallon barrel out back. So when it came time to rake leaves, I stuffed them into the barrel and poured a little lawnmower gas into the barrel. I bent down low and stuck a match through a low hole in the barrel. As you all can imagine it blew a shower of burning leaves all over the neighborhood with a big bang. I wasn't hurt, but sure was embarrassed.

Now, 50 years later,View attachment 515388 in my rural burn pile that i regularly use..........diesel and old motor oil is my only choice...along with the considerations of wind and ground dryness conditions.

Thanks. That reminds me, Country Home Products, here in VT sells a burn cage for burning brush, and other appropriate things. It contains a fire, and sparks,embers, etc., especially in close quarter neighborhoods, from spreading.
Not inexpensive, but neither is burning down one's house, barn, shed, etc.

Best method for burning brush I have found is a propane weed burner and a backpack blower. Just light the weed burner and stick it under the pile and then aim the blower at the fire. It will blow flames out the top of the brush pile and have it blazeing in just a few minutes.

It doesn't take much gas to be dangerous. I had almost a full 5 gallons of used motor oil that I always use to start my brush piles. I drained my lawnmower tank (less than a quart)into the used motor oil thinking it wouldn't hurt to mix with the oil. A month or so later, I use that mix to start a burn pile and it whooshed out just like pure gasoline would. Luckily no one was burned, but I don't mix my old gas with my used oil any more.

If I run out of used oil, I take some diesel to start my fire. The used oil takes some kindling or grass to get it started but then it burns really hot when it does get started.
