Actually it is the tank neck that is stripped. it is plastic and was iffy when I bought the tractor a few years ago, now, I can not tighten the cap. Any ideas on how to keep the cap tight?

Obviously trying to avoid replacing the entire tank, seems silly.

Thanks,
Joel

Take some teflon tape and wrap it around the neck. Just make sure none can get in the tank.

How important is a seal for a diesel tank? Obviously you don't want dust entering the tank. However it seems that evaporation is not as big an issue with diesel as with gasoline (based on personal experience as I've had a quarter jar of open diesel on my work bench for the past year with little evidence of evaporation). I'm sure the EPA would object to extra VOC but I wonder if a closed but unsealed diesel tank would cause any problems for the owner/operator.

Here's a weird idea but I would probably at least try it if it were me.

Sand and clean remaining threads.
Coat thickly with that good grey epoxy stuff.
Coat tank cap inside threads and top thickly with silicone grease.
Carefully/slowly 'screw' cap on trying to catch any existing threads and as much epoxy as possible.
Let it set just enough for the epoxy to firm up a bit, not to harden.
Gently twist cap mostly counter clockwise to make sure it hasn't been epoxied to the tank.
Continue moving cap thru drying process of epoxy for same reason.

Might work.

Good point Island, It is mostly the dust I'm concerned about. Not sure how much breathing is done through the cap, not much I'd think? I was thinking about using a plastic bag and eleastic band under the cap to seal out dust.

The apoxy Idea is a good one, something I could test out on something else plastic prior to implementing. It is an interesting idea though, just remake threads using cap as die.

Would be super slick if it worked.

Jeez Louise do not wrap teflon tape on the filler!

if you do the epoxy glue idea, make sure you get the epoxy for plastic's as some will not do plastic very well, good luck. There is one that car dealers and auto recyclers use just to repair cracked bumpers permanent fix.:)

Another thought:

Home Depot and others sell black rubber stoppers of different diameters. We used them in chemistry years ago. Get a stopper to fit the opening and in the center place a toggle bolt or long bolt with nut and washer. Just snug up the stopper into the filler neck after filling up with fuel. The bolt (handle) makes removal easy. A bit of spit to lube stopper makes it seat nicely
