Gas or Diesel tractors?

I like tractors and lawn mowers. I have a 1972 Simplicity and Allis Chalmers from the same year. I could see myself being a tractor collector if i had a good paying job.

Note: I hope "coldest weather" means -20f or lower. That's a whole different kind of cold. Nothing likes to start when it's that cold without being plugged in for at least a couple hours. Even then, my 1510 usually needs a couple of heater cycles before it will fire up. Up in this country, most everyone agrees diesels are harder to start in the extreme cold. I never said they won't start, they just take a little more coaxing.

By "The RIGHT diesels" do you mean new? Something with computer chips running everything? I like my old, mechanical engine. Less to go wrong. A little harder to start, perhaps, but very dependable.

Still rather have it than a gasser!

I know for a fact (family members) that the Perkins 3 cyl that will start in those cold temps with out a block heater. Have seen it, they are remarkable little engines.

I farm with both gas and diesel, can't afford to replace an old gasser that still get 'er done. I like the gas just fine, the old tractor engines have amazing torque and lugging ability, nothing like the new engines. My ford NAA tops out at 2500 rpm, the new diesels beat that and the new gassers are still idleing at that rpm. What I do like best about the diesel is the old Farmall will burn more fuel by morning coffee break time than the new JD diesel will all day long with more HP.

By "right diesel", I'm USUALLY talking about a 40 year old MF 150 with a Perkins AD3-152 3-cylinder diesel.... I've started mine literally hundreds of times in temps near or below zero, WITHOUT a block heater. Bump the key and let go....It'll be running before you get your hand off the key. It just starts that easy. I use it to jump start gas tractors and trucks in extreme cold weather when they won't go.... Smaller Perkins diesels are generally all easy starting.

My 2440 and 2640 Deeres are NOT easy starters....For that matter, NONE of the Deeres I own are quick starters in the winter.

Altogether, I've got 5 tractors that are 3 years old or less. None are exceptionally easy starters.

Advantage old=simple.....

I've had 3 diesels and probably 5 or 6 gassers. I like them both but I prefer the diesel over the gasser. I have a gasser now but it's only because I got a great deal on it.

Diesel makes my ears hurt.
Well..........stop pouring it in your ears, it is meant to be a fuel after all.:laughing:

My BIL has a JD 790, and it starts just like your Perkins, even at 10 to 20 below.

My GC2400 is very hard starting in cold weather, it has the Iseki engine in it.

Maybe a Minnesota or Anywhere Else thread?

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I wouldn't mind having an engine heater two or three weeks a year when it hits the +20s.

Marveltone probably pops a sweat just reading that.
