Gas Powered Air Compressor?

Sorry to have another compressor question, but I don't recall seeing another thread about gas powered units.

We need to outfit a chase truck @ work, and a couple of the requirements are: gas powered Air Compressor, gas powered Generator/Welder unit.

I'm not paying, so cost really isn't a consideration. Long lasting quality is the key here. Any recommendations?

Too broad a question for me, Eric. Are you going to get those in portable models you can take off the truck to use inside or places the truck can't get, or are you going to have them permanently mounted on the truck? What's the maximum air pressure you will need? What's the minimum CFM you'll need?

And even knowing those things, I probably still couldn't say for sure which one would be best; lots of good ones out there. Personally, I'd probably look for a compressor with the Honda engine, preferably a V-twin, cast iron compressor though.

How big of truck, the larger commercial trucks have air brakes
so u have air w/ these really easy.
Depending on the length of time u are running it a welder/gen
set would have enough power to run an electric compressor.

The company that built our barn used a truck that had a nice sized gasoline powered generator (fixed installation on the truck, I think), then just used a standard portable compressor to power their air tools. In other words, if you have a gasoline powered generator, do you need a gasoline powered air compressor, too? Perhaps you do, just thought I'd ask. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll try to hit all the questions in one replt.

I'm looking at the permanently mounted, no need to remove it. Will be an F-350 or 450, w/ a utility bed. Still waiting arrival of the truck, out of my control.

It'll be used to run a single impact, 3/4 or 1". Possibly pneu. grease gun, needle scaler, grinder. Also, to blow debris off the machine and its vital parts.

For this reason, I believe that it will need to have some serious output to minimize wait time. I don't want the compressor to be dependent on the Genset. The truck will not have air brakes.

Do the same people that make good elec. shop compressors also do the gas units? I just got in a big 'ol Quincy in to install in one of our shops.

Yes, at least some of them do. Just one example of what I think would be a good one can be found here. And as I said, this is just one example; there are lots of others that I think would be just as good.

I use to work for a company that had tire service trucks for their semis. These one ton trucks had a 302 Ford V-8 mounted in the service bed. All it was, was a air compressor. One of the heads had been removed and replaced with a special head and the camshaft had been changed. It ran on the four cylinders on one side and made air with the other cylinders. They worked really good.
