Gas station limits credit card purchase to $50

even with all the cameras at my local station when someone stole my wifes card and I tracked the purchases on line back to that station,I had the time of sale etc. but they were reluctant to look into it.
Even the local police didn't care to investigate.
And then to boot the card company says I owe the first 50 dollars. Well;l i said Its been reported stolen "missing" within 12 hours and that I wouldn't pay the 50 dollars until the investigation was over. and they said that there wouldn't be one.LOl
I pushed further to have them call the station but they declined.
Easier to write off the 300 dollars the person stole.
Oh and also the 50 dollars from me .
They realized that I wasn't going to pay .
Mind you this is all in a small town. They could have simply looked at the videos from the exact time and pump number get a plate and see where it went.

At stations where your purchase is limited, don't swipe your card if you want to purchase more than the limit. Bring your card to the attendant and tell them you want to purchase X amount or a fillup and they can set the pump to exceed the limit.

Until a few weeks ago, I would re-swipe the card and continue filling... can't do this anymore at any of my usual local name brand stations... one swipe in 24 hours is what I've been told due to the high occurrences of fraud and stolen cards...

I don't think that practice has been adopted in my area. Or at least it wasn't 5 days ago, when I filled one of our vehicles, came home and got the other one and went back and filled it, and while I carry more than one credit card, only one has ever been used for gasoline.

The normal limit around here on stations is $75, and you can only swipe your card twice in 24 hrs. Normally that's fine for any of our vehicles, though last year when diesel was almost $5 a gallon we were cutting it pretty close on needing 3 swipes. Eventually I would just tell the station a set amount so that I didn't have to swipe multiple times. Only problem with that is that the total amount is on your account for a few days until the actual amount you bought clears.

At that same time last year when fuel was high, for about 2 weeks a few station went to $100 limit. One station around here now actually still has the limit set at $100, but when you put the card in a second time to fill up it then cuts off at $50. Situations like that make we wonder whether its actually the station or the card setting the limit, as they both always claim it's the other. Who knows, all that matters is that fuel isn't as high right now and I can usually get away with one swipe when filling up the trucks.

The station sets the policy on how many times you can use the card and the limit per use.

Last year when the price of diesel was so high, one station had a limit of $50. It was taking three swipes to fill up!:eek::eek:

I got fed up with this nonsense and called the card company. They told me that this was all set by the store....

I like to pay at the pump. I don't want to go into the store at all since that just means yet another line to wait in. I stopped going to the station that was limiting me to $50 at a time. That required me to get fuel across the street. :D The guy across the street did not set a limit on the fill up but I still had to go inside. A guy waiting in line behind me about passed out when he saw how much *** I *** was paying to fill up the truck.:D:D

I am going to avoid all of this when I finally get a fuel pump for our 285 gallon tank. :D I still have to paint the tank, clean out the fuel oil and build a shed before we get a load of diesel. But once my chores are done I will be filling up at home. One pump. Up to 285 gallons at a time. One bill. :D:D:D:D:D

Later,
Dan

Welcome to the real world....What is on television in the crime shows, CSI, NCIS, FBI, etc just to name a few and actual life in the fast lane of criminal activity is as different as night and day. I don't blame merchants for limiting the amount of gas one can pump. A merchant is making 3-10 cents per gallon of gasoline sold. A $100.00 dollar loss to a drive off if his is making ten cents per gallon profit means he will have to sell 1,000 gallon of gas to just pay for the "Drive Off". You can also write down all the license numbers you want to, what good will it do you. Remember our system of justice requires the accused to be confronted in a court of law by his accusser. How many can identify someone from a hundred feet away and testify in court this is the individual that stole the gas. If you loan your automobile to "Joe Doakes" and Joe steals $400.00 dollars worth of gas, the person at the station writes down the license number on the vehicle Joe was driving and the police arrive at your front door. You stand on your constitutional rights and deny driving the vehicle at the time of the theft. You are not forth coming with the information that you loaned the vehicle to Joe Doakes. The police do not beleive you and obtain a warrant for your arrest. At trial in open court the clerk is unable to identify you as the driver stating they have never seen you before, remember you do not have to give testimony against yourself so you do not open your mouth in court. Now the question: After the trial you dismiss your criminal attorney and obtain one well versed in Civil Actions. After the Civil Trial, who owns the Station where the theft occured? You, Joe Doakes or the original owner? If you said Joe Doakes or the original owner go to the rear of the class and do not collect $200.00.

I just think it's strange that I can use my card in a foreign country, without any ID and can buy a couple of hundred dollars worth of fuel and can't do the same 1 mile from my home...

If stations would post their credit card policy at the pump, I could read it and then decided if I still wanted to do business or not...

And it's not like I can pay cash... they don't accept $50 or $100 bills for my $120 fuel purchase...

Just a sad commentary on the times I guess...

The new twist is a credit card here can only be used once in 24 hours at the same station... so when I'm filling the 34 Gallon Tank in my Chevy Truck @ $3.29 a gallon I can buy about 22 gallons of fuel in one 24 hour period at the same station.

At $3.29 per gallon, it seems to me that you have lots more problems than credit card limits.;) Sheesh! That's $1.06 more per gallon than I paid last week. You have my sympathy.:(

I've experienced limits with my debit card even after entering my PIN code. I used to get around all of that by buying a Walmart gift card for $150 with my debit card and use that at the Murphy USA pump. Imagine my shock when one holiday weekend I went to fill up and all the pumps at my local Murphy had a sign saying they could not accept Walmart cash cards. Luckily, my debit card worked just fine.:D

How about oil company specific credit cards? Do Shell, Exxon-Mobil, and Diamond Shamrock cards have limits?

Good Question and one I don't know the answer...

I had a Mobil, Unocal and a Sears Card for years... all of them were cancelled... unbeknownst to me.

The Unocal was a corporate card and it could not be used after 6 pm or more that 3 times in a day.
