Does anyone know if the gasket material under the ring that the gas cap hooks into is a standard material? Mine is leaking. I tightened the screws a little but I don't want to strip them...thought maybe I'd get something a little thicker. This thing uses enough gasoline without it sloshing out of the tank! :)

Mine leaks too! I don't have a solution, Just don't fill the tank all of the way. It still leaks, but less. I think the tank needs a baffle inside. Anyone have any thoughts on this.

I fill mine to about 8" below the cap and it doesn't slosh out. It originally came with a SAFE FILL line sticker on it about 6" below the cap, but the gas made the sticker fall off!

I first noticed mine leaking the first time I filled it. I had the tip of the gas can nozzle just under that metal lip. Gas ran pretty much right out under the gasket in a spot where the plastic weld in the tank is quite uneven. It seems like I'm sloshing out quite a bit of gas...especially since I'm still so jerky on the machine controls.

There have been several types of gas tanks on the 400 series over the years.
Does yours look like this?

Well...hard to tell exactly, but it looks very similar...and that cork looking seal isn't sealing where the seam of the plastic tank is uneven on one side. I may try and tighten down those screws and if they strip, go to bolts. I worry about dropping a nut into the tank though. And I'm not sure what type of bolt won't corrode with exposure to the gasoline.

Homebrew,

Too bad PT still has not fixed this problem. I went to a autoparts store, bought thicker gasket material and replaced the screws with bolts. Not easy, but it barely leaks now

Homebrew I brought home my new 425 on the 22nd of April. I was just over 9 hrs. as of switch off last night. After reading your post I inspected mine but saw no signs of gas leakage. I've not filled mine above ~ 3 inches below the top fill line sticker. BTW, our two purchases just about doubled the number of PTs listed on this forum. I'm over near Huntington.

PTOuser, I saw your location and almost contacted you last week to see if I could check yours out. My brother-in-law who went with me to pick mine up lives in Teays Valley. But since I had already made up my mind I was getting one, I decided not to bother you.

Although this is an older thread I decided to bump it back to the top because I am having the same problems with my gas cap, this and no one has said anything for a couple of days. I can't tell if my tank is leaking from the seal or the cap itself. It don't look like it has a breather hole but some type of pressure mechanism in the cap itself. I think the cap is just to tight an the tank is trying to pull in air to equalize the pressure but it is not getting enough. What have any of you done with good results? Drill out the little rattle thing or what? The smell of gas concerns me and my tank looks like Mossroads. Thanks
