Oil & Fuel Gas tank gasket

   / Gas tank gasket #11
I would just get a new cap. Drilling it out is just going to let dust and gunk into your tank, while letting gasoline slosh out into a hot engine compartment...Not recommended.

Many moons ago, I drilled out a gas cap on a problematic engine. It solved the engine issues, but sprayed gas around like cheap perfume on Saturday night...I replaced the cap about one use later.

All the best,

Peter
Although this is an older thread I decided to bump it back to the top because I am having the same problems with my gas cap, this and no one has said anything for a couple of days. I can't tell if my tank is leaking from the seal or the cap itself. It don't look like it has a breather hole but some type of pressure mechanism in the cap itself. I think the cap is just to tight an the tank is trying to pull in air to equalize the pressure but it is not getting enough. What have any of you done with good results? Drill out the little rattle thing or what? The smell of gas concerns me and my tank looks like Mossroads. Thanks

My gas tank leaked also. Below is a picture of the cause and the remedy.
Cork is factory gasket, white is my 1/2 gasket. I first tried tightening screws, but soon realized that wasn't the problem. The seam between the 2 halves of the tank is very poor, causing one side to be higher than the other by approx. 1/32". If you look at the arrow in the picture, the white part is the 1/2 round gasket I placed under the factory full gasket and steel ring. The difference in height was much too great for the single gasket to seal. My first thought was to shave off the excessive material, but I determined that was too difficult to do and decided to just fill up the space. It was easier and it worked, gas has not leaked out since the fix and I fill it to within 1" of the top of the tank.

What type of material did you use for your 1/2 gasket? It does look the same as my problem I am having.

Thanks
