Gas usage during idling

Or they got tired of people stealing their trucks. Liability risk is worth much more than fuel.

Starters cost less than trucks.

According to published data my little VW TDI burns 0.1 liters per hour when operating, that's 0.02 gallons or about 3.5 ounces. At 70mph on the interstate it gets about 45mpg, or about 1.5 gallons per hour.

When towing I get 12 mpg at 60 mph so that's 5 gph. Wow! Seems like a lot of fuel. It is no wonder that guys put large auxilliary tanks in their pickups. If I wanted to drive 12 hours per day I would go through 60 gallons and 240$!

the 3406E in my pete 379 triaxle road tractor burns about 2/3gal per hour, at idle, with the a/c on (meaning the engine fan is also on). it is a day cab, so no extra "appliances". i was always told to just leave it running all the time, unless done for the day, and thats what i always did. 22000 trouble free hours later, they bought me a new truck..........
