Another Great De-greaser>> Dawn Dish washing Soap in Boiling Water. Auto Mechanics use it all the time. The best De-greaser is now baned.
> Trichloroethylene. < . I have 10 gallons.
Non Flamable too. The guys used it to degrease Oxygen Cyllinders.

Good luck.

YouTube - welding aluminium part 1

This youtube video is very explanatory on how these rods work .

Three key points are :-

You must use a Stainless steel abraider to scratch the surface under the deposited metal so it will adhere . The commentator forgets to mention this a couple of times especially in part 2 but you will see it is a thin Stainless steel rod he is using and not the alloy soldering rod to scratch the surface .

You must not be tempted to put the rod into the flame at first , it must be the heat in the parent metal that melts the rod .

The wire brush must be Stainless steel .

again.. the wire brush was stainless. I know about the heat in the parent metal melting the rod. I've been soldering for 25 years. the metal part was degreased, and washed. I probably hit it with ms and naptha.. but in any case. I'm guessing the 50 years of caked oil and grease that were on it are doing much more towards contamination than the wipe down with ms.

if I have the gumption, I might soak it in a soap based degreaser solvent, and then boil it.. then clean it with water and cook it on the bbq grill for an extended time to see if i can cook out the contaminates. but really at this point it's a moot issue.. I have a workaround repair for the part already in place and installed. the alloy solder rod on clean aluminum bar stock worked out fine.. just didn't like the cast.

I was tempted to hit it with some flux and see what silver solder would do with it.. but at this point.. it's not important either way.

I was not questioning you in any way , I'm sorry you think that . I was merely adding to your thread telling other people how and what they should do for their own learning with the youtube link to help them . I will be more careful in the future .

i didn't think that.. just re-iterating it for the rest of the thread / anyone just joining in.

I -always- look forward to your input and comments. I've enjoyed our exchanges past and present.
