Chance are what you smell around WELL HEADS may be some H2S or heavier hydrocarbons than methane.
A gas producing well usually has a range of hydrocarbons present in the gas. Plants separate these out and distribute methane which will have some mercapton or other odorant added before it gets to the consumer. This odorant may not be added for main transmission lines but only on those lines which feed the customer.
It's a great joy to be selected to fill one of the mercaton pots.
