kubmech got in before my post and answered the question for you Bird. Thanks kubmech I have looked all over for those.

My brother had a Matco tool truck and he says some of the mechanics came on the truck and asked, "You got any of those roloc disks?" (and he thinks that's Snap-on's name for them), others would ask "You got any of those Scotch Brite disks?" (and he thinks those are made by 3M), and the Matco disks are made for Matco by Merit Abrasive Products. And they're all apparently about the same thing. So far I haven't seen them anywhere except on the tool trucks, but apparently all of them carry the disks. My brother had them in fine, medium, and coarse grain and said the coarse ones outsold the other two by a hundred to one.

Gasket dressings:
I've used silicon with no gasket on stuff like water pumps and thermostats. Works ok.

I"ve talked to more diesel truck mechanics than I really wanted to, and have formed the following opinion.
The more likely a mechanic is to see an engine again, the less likely he is to use a gasket sealer.

I was a truck parts salesman for many years. The blue tube gasket caused me more grief than anything else. The user would use much more than was needed. It would plug oil ports and chunks would actually break off and plug oil passages with the resulting damage to bearings. Just my 2 cents. JIM

I love roloc discs but you have to watch how you use them. Ford has determinded that the wore off abrasive is a major cause of engine failure. If they do an oil analysis of a failed rebuilt engine and detect any material from a roloc disc they void the warranty. They will also remove metal, fast! You won't have too much problem with them on cast iron but they can screw up aluminum with a quickness. I usually scrape as much of the old gasket off as I can and then use the pads for the rough stuff and surface prep. That saves you money, too. Last time I bought any they were around a buck apiece.

I think you hit the nail on the head there, Ernie./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I saw in a parts store a spray can of 'gasket remover' or some such.

Anyone have any experience with this spray-on kind of elbow grease?
