Yes, Carefull on that finite word with Natural Gas. Oil is finite, Natural Gases are not.

Mike I stand to be corrected. The natural gas that we heat our homes and generate electricity with etc is a finite resource. Gas that is biogenerated as well as hydrogen is not finite. Boigas is a miniscule amount of our consumption though.

Natural gas as I know it is a byproduct of oil. If there is gas, then there is oil.

Varmintmist: No. Reservoirs and the wells that penetrate them can contain either oil, gas, or water, Or any combination of those three. If you have the mineral rights on you're property you can look in to the market value of those rights.

As oil and natural gas prices increase alternative energy will become viable and cost effective. Biogas is one gas source that may increase in popularity as will ethanol. However prices for our finite oil and natural gas is going to go up over the long term. Get used to it.

I agree Alan and we can talk about depreciation valve, but if fuel is so high that no one wants them.....It is only worth what someone will pay.

I know I am very glad I sold my truck. I save a lot on fuel, oil, etc.

Most electricity in this country is generated from burning natural gas; coal is second, hydroelectric is third, and everything else (nuclear, wind, etc.) is last.

Very True........and the US and China are shopping the world and signing contracts at the current prices. You cannot be a world power without the security of supply of oil.

Talking tractors....my new TC40DA will make short work of my chores and is more efficient than my old NAA. More fun too. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

( I was told, but have no way to verify it, that the oil from the Alaska pipe line goes to Japan.)

The oil from the Alaska pipeline goes to the west coast of the U.S. When the pipline was first built, the owners of the Alaskan crude (mainly BP, Arco, and Phillips) were prohibited by law from selling it directly to Japan, even though ( it is less expensive to import the oil and sell what we produce to Japan at a profit.). I'm not certain but believe that this law has since been revoked.

( To my way of thinking, it shouldn't matter where the oil is produced, because the world barrel price usually determines the true value.)

BINGO! You are exactly correct Junkman. The only practical difference between crude oil sources is the stability of the source country, and of course the trade deficit engendered by having to buy from foreign sources.

Didn't think this sounded quite right. So I did a little bit of searching. According to the Energy for Kids website (a government run site). Here are the percentages:

[*]Coal - 51% [*] Nuclear power - 20% [*]Natural Gas - 16% [*]Petroleum - 3% [*]Hydropower - 7% [*]Geothermal power - 1% [*]Solar Power - <1% [*]Wind power - <1% [*]Biomass - 2% [/list]

Natural Gas is third.

Note: Obviously they've done some rounding with these numbers as they add up to a little over 100%.

The Energy Information Administration has a little better numbers than the kid's site; they do put coal as #1 but decreasing, natural gas as number two but increasing (although this fluctuates seasonally), and both nuclear and hydroelectric below that.

Do you have a link to some where else on their page?

This is the "adult" version for 2003 that they have listed:
Electricity Quick Stats

BTW the kids site I list was from the Energy Information Administration.

Out here in California, we use natural gas, nuclear, hydro and lastly coal for a total of some 277,000 gigawatt hours of power. That total however is achieved by having to buy electricity outside where coal jumps into second place well after natural gas. I have never seen a piece of coal. When I flew back East I was amazed at all the coal burning electric generating plant smoke stacks you could see from the airplane.
