I heard on the news gas prices could be $3.00 a gallon this summer. That is going to really put the squeeze on a lot of people etc.....I wonder where the diesel prices will go to ???

I feel we are getting to the point where alternate fuels are needed.

We had a pretty good technology lead in LNG fuels a while back. Had a pilot program in place, etc. etc. Last I heard the stations were being disassembled and shipped to asia.

Too bad. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My trip later this month out west should have a total of 8000 miles. Each $.25 raises the cost $119. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Looks like I may have to stay at a few Motel 6's to balance out the cost. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Diesel will not matter until I get back and have to cut lawn and do summer projects. Maybe not. Son is staying at our place while we are gone. He likes to play with Diesel equipment. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Someone sent me a piece a while back from an entertainer. Said that we should open the pipe line from Alaska, offer those in the middle east 10.00 a barrel and then watch them drown in thier own oil.

Of course the other way is everyone in the country "take a weekend off", dont drive, use anything that uses gasoline or deisel. How much "glut" would that produce? I'll be first in line to do this, since I love weekends with NOTHING to do but sit around watching grass grow, or golf on TV.

I'll be trading in the Sport Trac for something a lot less expensive on gas if this happens, maybe even hybrid!

I heard that by May gas prices will average $2.50 a gallon with much higher prices by the summer travel season. The article mentioned several reasons for the price increase which is related to increase in demand around the world with India and China being the top two.

However the consumption of fuel by Americans has increased and the production of domestic oil has dropped. Americans still have a love affair going with low milage SUV's and light trucks. Our driving habits are not fuel efficient. I live in the country and when visiting cities I notice how many drivers have to race as fast as they can to the next stop light. Highway speeds of 80 MPH burn a lot more fuel than 55 MPH.

I don't like the fact that gas prices probably will never go below $2.00 a gallon again and you can bet my next car will be one that gets more miles per gallon.

We are starting to do our part. Instead of driving the big 4X4 this year, we will driving around in the new more efficient Pontiac G6 we picked up last night.

hmm, $3/gal. Dont we hear this same story every year about this time. I have yet to pay over $2.05/gal for gas.

Now there's an authoritive source of information - they know more about everything than us poor folks, right?

( Said that we should open the pipe line from Alaska, offer those in the middle east 10.00 a barrel and then watch them drown in thier own oil.)

/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif He thinks that the Alaska pipeline is not running now? It's running wide open - there's only so much production from the North Slope, it declines every month, and it isn't a tiny fraction of what we consume in this country every day.

( Of course the other way is everyone in the country "take a weekend off", dont drive, use anything that uses gasoline or deisel. How much "glut" would that produce?)

None at all.

( I'll be first in line to do this, since I love weekends with NOTHING to do but sit around watching grass grow, or golf on TV.)

Have at it to your heart's content, but where do you think the energy comes from to heat and cool your house and to make the electricity that runs your TV?

Now that is one thing that actually makes sense.

Here is an article I clipped from the National Association of Convenience Stores, it was posted on their site today. (members of NACS include Exxon, BP/Amoco, Shell Oil, Marathon, etc)

Gas Prices Expected to Heat Up For Summer
March 8, 2005

FORT COLLINS, CO -- Across the nation, an increase in gasoline prices has consumers sweating about the coming summer driving season, Coloradoan.com reports. NACS Director of Public Affairs Jeff Lenard told the news Web site that a greater demand for gas in developing countries, increasing crude oil prices and the imminent arrival of spring largely caused the jump.

In preparation for the coming summer season, many U.S. cities switch to a seasonal blend of gasoline that helps to reduce smog, but is more expensive to produce.

Lenard also pointed out that diesel prices, typically lower than gasoline prices, have risen because of the 2004 gas shortage. When OPEC reduced its oil production last February for a short time, refineries produced as much gasoline as possible, and diesel fuel production suffered as a result, he said.

“There are concerns about the general political unrest in Venezuela, Nigeria and, of course, the continued instability in the Middle East,” Lenard told Coloradaon.com. “None of these has led to a dramatic drop in production, but the fear of it has kept prices high.”

Lenard said competition between gas stations, different gas brands and fuel taxes cause the discrepancy in gasoline prices. Rising crude oil prices compound retailers’ struggle with shrinking profit margins, causing them to keep gasoline prices competitive with local gas stations.

“Consumers have become more price sensitive about the price of gas then ever before,” Lenard said. “We have seen studies that show close to half of consumers will switch where they buy gas for as little as 3 cents a gallon.”

Last week NACS Daily highlighted recent figures from This Week in Petroleum that show diesel fuel prices jumped 9.8 cents to top $2.11, approximately 50 cents higher than the same time last year. Gasoline prices climbed 2.3 cents to top $1.92, more than 21 cents higher than the same time in 2004.

Crude oil prices have reached about $53 a barrel, and OPEC officials have predicted that the price could climb as much as $80 a barrel in the next two years.

And none of that is particularly good news, but I don't see them predicting $3.00 per gallong.

Also something to note, our good old US Congress is currently working on authorizing drilling in the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge. If they pass that legislation today, it will still take a while for that oil to come out of the ground, but certainly by next summer that would take A LITTLE BIT of pressure off the need to import so much oil.

much of electricity is generated from coal and some from neuclear.

btw a guy form the OPEC oil ministry was complaining about the high oil prices too, maybe a lot of the rise is due to increasing profits made by the middlemen and futures players ?
