Gasoline Stabilizer & Cars

I have been using Sta-Bil in the gas for all of my small engines for years and it works well.

Recently we have acquired a few cars & pickups that are not driven very often and I have been using Sta-Bil in them also. Now I have started to wonder if this is necessary.

I always thought the reason for using Sta-Bil was to prevent carburator gumming and varnish, but these days all of the cars & trucks we have are fuel injected. Do I still need the Sta-Bil?

Yes. The gas will still create a gum deposit in the tank, lines, injector nozzles, etc. Where ever gas WAS, gum will be there months from now.

I fill my ranch truck with the same 5 gal containers as used for my small engines. When I bring the containers home from filling, I add appropriate amounts of Stabil and Chevron Techron ... reasonably cheap piece of mind as I may not use various machines or fuel for 6 months at a time.

How do you stir it in then?

I always put the additive into an empty container just before pumping and the stirring action of pumping the gasoline into it mixes the additive. If I am puttng it into a gas tank on a car, I put the additive in first, then pump, both to stir it up and to flush the additive out of the fill tube and into the tank.

Well ... I put in the appropriate amounts from the respective additive containers into the full 5G containers then pick them up about 1" off the ground then using mostly my wrist muscles, twist the 5G container back and forth about 20 times ... alternating arms, as the other one is holding my beer.
