Gasoline storage

I've got (2) 30 gal HYPE(?) drums I got from the local car wash. They had "caustic" chemicals (soap with additives) in them. They are thick walled, have 2 bung holes on top with rubber gaskets and have housed my gasoline needs for over 2 years. (I fill them up every month). Got the drums free from the car wash.

I bought a 12v 55 gal drum pump off ebay to pump the gas from the drums to the vehicles. I use our accumulated fuel points from our local grocer to get $1 off a gallon. Hence 2 drums to maximize our savings.

Works great. Save an avg of $70/month on gas by doing this.

When you guys are filling these larger containers from the bed of your truck do you mess around with any kind of ground strap?

I do have a tractor with forks so the weight is no problem. Maybe I’m overthinking it but I don’t wanna blow up at the gas station lol.

On mine its the pump itself. Its not rated for volatility of gas.
So maybe I could get a diesel tank and change out the pump rated for gas?

I use a ratchet strap to hold the drum in place in my pickup until I get it home. I have a 2x10x16' "ramp" that I use to slide the drum onto a roll-around dolly. If you're going to store it outside, then I'd put it up on some sort of platform, like a pallet, or 2x's to keep it off of the soil/gravel.

Is static during filling the container an issue? I’ve never experienced this filling 5 gallon cans but I keep reading that it’s a thing.

I was going through this myself. I contacted 3 local fire departments. One had no recommendation, and the other 2 said do what the manufacturer recommends (which is NOT fill in the bed of a truck) so I am still using 5 gal cans on the ground. Sucks.

30 gallon drum with crank pump or dedicated fuel caddy?

My carbureted service truck has a 34 gallon tank and I added a dispensing pump which conveniently covers my gasoline needs.

For Diesel I stay with 5 gallon containers.

Yeah the 14 gallon caddies are somewhat able for me to remove/ fill and place back in my beater hatchback for transport steel 35 gallon definitely not and use my single axle trailer with ramp but I only use that one for diesel anyway. I think gas weighs around 6 pounds a gallon so 14 of them is 84 lbs or so + weight of container empty. I pretreat all gas or diesel with additives and only fill gas caddy with ethanol free.

I have two of these. One for gas, one for diesel.

Same here, I have both strapped to a pallet to fork them in and out of my truck after filling.

I had to upgrade the cheap OEM hoses to real fuel hoses after 1 yr as the hoses on the gasoline side got brittle and started craking. While upgrading the hoses, I added a Goldenrod water block particulate filter to each.

Both hand pumps are still working on mine, but my brother had one go out on him after just over a year.

I store mine outdoors with a tarp over them, haven't had any issues other than the hoses.
