(Oh, how to put this delicately?) May I ask if your lovely wife's occasional gassy episodes have cleared up?

Well, there has always been that delicate and still unasked question as to whether the dog is being unfairly blamed................

No input on your situation, but reminded me of a funny story. Well had this stupid cat named numb nutts that wouldn't touch any meat with a ten foot pole. Grabbed the cat one day and had a raw piece of chicken in my other hand and that cat like to tore me up trying to get away. Only thing that cat would eat that resembled meat was the summer cicada hatch. Was working on my truck a few years ago, and it was cold outside around 30 degrees with freezing rain, and wanted to take the truck on a test drive after repairing. Well that cat was hanging around so I grabbed the cat and threw it in the truck with myself and the nephew. Well that cat jumped up on the dash and laid down and was enjoying the heat from the defrosters running, about that time the cat farted, and that mixed with the warm air from the defrosters, had to roll all the windows down on the truck just to make it back to the house.

I once knew an old man who used to hit his dog when the dog gassed up the room. After a while the dog made the connection and would poot then get up and run out of the room!

Last year we rescued a greyhound fresh off the track. He was quite underweight because that is their prime racing condition. We fed him a high quality food but he gulped it down faster than I ever saw a dog eat before, probably because he was used to being so hungry all the time.

He woke us up several times as he odorized our house during the night, with us first blaming each other for the foul smell until we realized it was him. We tried feeding him all the recommended things for this condition, pumpkin, green beans, rice, yogurt, with him happily gulping down the food as fast as we could put it in his dish. Still, the smell persisted.

By this time he had gained a little weight but still ate like he was starving. Our next plan was to make him eat slower. I took him out in the yard and threw a few handfuls of food around in the grass, making him look for each individual piece insuring that he would be eating slower. He rewarded us that night by letting us have an uninterrupted sleep and a sweeter smelling house in the morning.

We fed him this same way for a few weeks with good results and by the time he was up to his recommended weight he was eating slower and sometimes not even finding all the food in the grass before finishing up.

We then put small amounts of food in his dish several times a day which he seemed to eat at more of a normal pace and we were able to cut down on our Febreze bill.

I have read that rapid bolting of food contributes to gassiness, in dogs and humans. Our dog used to eat fast but has slowed down a little lately. They make special bowls shaped to make them eat slower. Have not gone that route yet.

Did a new diet fix the problem?

Things are better. Still not perfect. Definitely fewer room clearing events. Whether it is the new food or the bean-o type pills I don't know. He's still a puppy so he might just be growing out of it a bit. Hard to say.

Don't forget; dog farts are the result of incomplete digestion of their food...this undigested food is metabolized by the bacteria in the gut which then produces the gas. Carbohydrates, i.e. corn and wheat products are a big contributor, as they say are dairy products. I'm not absolutely positive, but I also believe that certain breeds...like bulldogs/boxers/Boston Terriers are prone to making enough gas to run the furnace.

We feed our dog (Boston Terrier) a dog food that has no grain and she does pretty well until she gets a left over dollup of biscuits and gravy, ice cream or a slice of cheese...which she dearly loves. They say that gulping their food will also cause it, as the previous post seems to prove.

Another thing; a dog's low level of certain digestive enzymes can increase over time to accommodate the offending diet, effectively "growing out of it". In any case, we have had Boston Terriers in our family since the early 50's and we dearly love them...gas and all. On the other hand, she will occasionally get kicked out of bed for her offending behavior.

Now that you're mentioning breeds, reading this post is making me appreciate my Schnauzer all the more. He has his problems but this isn't one of them.

The Golden Retrievers we have had all had eating issues. I think two of them would eat themselves sick if given the chance. :confused3::shocked: We have a bowl that has a couple of cylinders that forces the dog to eat slower. The dog has to eat around those cylinders so it slows down the eating.

The dog is on a raw meat diet and she does not really have bad gas. Every once in a while maybe but I think that is from eating something in the woods.

Later,
Dan

One evening while were off stage in the wings behind the curtains waiting quietly for our que to go onstage during one of our performances of Orphan Annie. The dog let drift with a rancid cloud of eye watering vapours while we were crowded together and surrounded by curtains . A true test of self control to keep from ruining the scene.

Must have been in the late eighties, my then wife in her infinite wisdom gave our boxer some cabbage. Whew!

Anyway, I won't say anything specifically bad about Science Diet but one of our dogs has some 28 allergies. I happened to be discussing him with a gal at Petsmart one day and she suggested Blue Basics, Grain Free, Limited Ingredients. We went with it and have not looked back. Albeit still pricey but not as much as the SD, while he is not totally without issues, he improved greatly. FWIW, I had been getting it at a store called Petscense, by ten get one free but the price on a 28lb bag is at 62 or 63 bucks! TSC is like seven bucks less plus once in awhile they run a 10% off on everything or so. That website chewy.com that is advertising lately is showing some decent prices on food as well.
