Anybody got any great ideas for hinges on a homemade pipe gate attached to a wooden barn post? I've thought of bought bullet hinges welded to some iron and then bolted to the post. Also some kind of nested pipe hinge. Gate will be a little over 10 feet. Any, "Wow that's awesome" ideas out there?

I'd just use a lag hinge and regular chain link gate hinges, providing the gate wasn't made of bar stock and weighed a ton.

This summer I installed two 10' pipe gates for a 20' entrance, using the lag hinge just as flyerdan described, but if you're afraid the gate might be heavy, use the lag bolts, which can be tightened up with time.

These folks have about every hinge you can imagine. Good to deal with as well.

We handle gates and stalls from CK manufacturing in PA. They offer a continuous plate hinge that you bolt to the post or building. The pins never move and actually on light gates give more reinforcement to them! Your threaded lag bolts might turn or twist allowing the gate to get weaker.

I built a deer gate for the garden out of pipe that is 20 feet long and just used the old barn door type hinges , just fastened them to the post and wrapped the tapered end around the pipe and welded - works even better than I expected.

Gates are 10 feet long and about 70 pounds. Thanks for the responses.
