We are thinking about putting a gate across our dirt road (mainly to keep looky-loos out)

Any recommendations on how wide? I want to make sure that I make it wide enough to allow any large vehicles to come down the road, but too wide also becomes a problem as I know it will sag over time.

I think a 12' gate would be the minimum width to use. We have a 12' gate on our driveway and I use 16' gates in the pasture.

12' or 14'

how wide is the road?

I am doing similiar project and the guys at the Sioux Falls SD TSC said 12' is their biggest seller

We put up a new gate last summer. Rather than one big long gate, we hung two 8' footers that join in the middle. Less stress on the posts IMO.

We might have gotten by with a smaller opening....but I do have a corner to negotiate near my gate, and this made it more user friendly with a long load.

An fire truck is at least 8.5 feet wide. Give them 3-4 feet on each side in case they cant get the gate all of the way open for some reason.
Double 8s or a 10 and a 6 (so that you only need to open one for normal use) would be my preference.

I have two 10' gates, no "sag' if the post there on are solid.

The closer to the road the bigger you need IMO. If you have a set back entrance from the road (common here) a smaller entrance will work, allows the vehicle w/ trailer to straighten out on it's approach.

I use two 8 footers. I leave one closed and the other open most of the time. A pickup truck with wide mirrors can make it thru slowly if you keep 1" between the gate post and the mirror. You have to go slowly to do this. In case machinery is going through, both gates can be opened. For privacy, both can be closed.

This keeps the sag down, the lookers, outside, and the curious staying away. A sign on the closed gate spells it all out.
