With doubles, you could have uneven sizes: for example, a 12 and an 8 or 6. Until you had that rare wide load, only one needs to be opened.

I have two 12 foot gates with a wheel at the bottoms of both gates. While 24 feet opening might sound big, it's only about 6 feet on either side for an RV or big rig. I've been through plenty of smaller gates and had to slow down and pay attention to going through them. I've never regretted having a bigger opening to drive through, only regretted having smaller ones.

I have a gate right on the road. It takes 24' of width to make the turn off the road with the tractor and a pull implement, or a pickup and a 16' trailer. Getting a semi off the road would be a real challenge, but I think a good driver could do it if he swung into the oncoming lane of traffic to make the turn.

Check your local fire department. I had to call my own dept for a medical aid a couple weeks ago. Our engines and medics fit thru my 12' gate...

My 27' 5th wheel behind my longbed pickup fits easily too.

If you have a support or sign over the top, make sure tou have lots of vertical clearance...
