Just wondering if anyone knows if gator blades are available yet for the 62C? I have seen them listed for just about every deck up to the previous 60" deck, but not for the 62". I have them on my 335/54, they work great and would like to get a set for my 2210. I checked the listings at Jack's and they don't list them either.....

I saw them listed in a catalog for the 62C & I have also seen them for sale on Ebay for the 62C.

<font color="green">So how great are Gator blades and why would I want to use them?

Do they cost more or less than John Deere blades for the 62C? If they cost more are they worth it?

My boss at the JD dealer recommended Gator blades to us so my dad picked some up and we put them on our 2 48'' decks. I used my mower over the weekend and I was cutting thick grass with no clogging. Normally it would clog up in those conditions. I think the upward facing teeth helped scrape some of the grass clippings away and out the mower. So far so good and he said they were not much more than standard factory Deere blades.

Hi, Fred. I might have mentioned this before, but I have been very pleased with the results I get using stock mulching kits on JD decks. I have had mulching kits installed on a 2000 JD 445 w/60, 2003 JD 2210 w/62C, and now on my 4110 w/60. With all mulching kits there is an inherent increased amount of time required to clean the deck and baffles, but the cut is worth it IMHO. Of all three decks I have used/owned, the 62C performed the best with the kit. With all three decks the cut quality was outstanding. The 62C mulching kit surpassed the 60" deck kits by its ability to stay clear during mowing and clean after repeated mowings.

I would not recommend a mulching kit to anyone who wants to cut grass for several months without even looking under the deck. A good mulching kit will turn clippings into such a fine material that it 'pastes' into every nook and cranny of the underside of the deck. The 62C mulching kit is comprised of three blades and heavy plastic baffles. The 60" decks are equpipped for mulching with steel plates and baffles. This is one case where I believe plastic outperforms steel, and where the molded and enclosed plastic baffles will probably outlast the steel baffle plates.

Even if you don't want to add the full kit, you might just try out the stock JD mulching blades that are issued with a mulching kit. They have the extra lift and secondary cutting edge that might produce the finer discharge you are looking for.

Good luck!

BigPete,

Thanks for the suggestion on the mulching blades. Years ago I converted my LX188/48" with the mulch kit and the results were pretty good. I know the blades and baffles have improved since then so they should work even better.

For awhile I had both my 335/54/gator blades and my mom's 345/54/std blades at my house. The gator blades would leave no trace of grass while the std blades would leave a windrow. I couldn't believe the difference until I saw the two tractors mowing side-by-side. My guess is the lift and swirl of the mulch blades must provide cutting action similar to the gators.

It would be interesting to combine gator blades and mulch baffles....perhaps the ultimate mulching machine..... :)

Thanks again!

I HAVE THE GATOR BLADES ON MY 48C DECK FOR MY LT180. THE BLADES NOT ONLY MOW BETTER, WITH LESS CLOGGING, BUT STAY SHARPER MUCH LONGER. THESE BLADES ARE AT LEAST 2X HEAVIER THAN OEM BLADES. THE "TEETH" DO SEEM TO CLEAN THE DECK UNDERSIDE A BIT BETTER. I WILL CERTAINLY GET A SET FOR MY PUSHMOWER.

I guess the manufacturer of the Gator blades has changed some things in the last 5 years. A brother-in-law, a neighbor, and I all three bought Gator blades a few years ago for our lawn tractors; a Montgomery Ward, an MTD, and a Cub Cadet. And it didn't take long for all 3 of us to throw them in the scrap metal bin and go back to OEM blades that cost half as much and cut much better. And the ones I got were considerably lighter than OEM blades.
