On the 06 HPX and the new XUV I wouldn't think leaving it in 4 wheel drive would make it eat up tires because it is an "on demand" system that only engages when the rear wheel sense a slip. Looks like I better keep the stock tires on this to avoid axel problems. I'm the type to add more dealer options rather than trying to modify the original design. However, if they ever come out with a chip or programmer for the XUV I might give that a try.

I think it's always "on" when you have it in 4wheel drive it's just the front dif isn't locked all the time and thats the "on-demand" part you are thinking about.

On a weird note I was in 2 wheel drive awhile back with the back dif locked and spinning both tires when the front end suddenly kicked in. How the heck does this happen ? The switch was still on 2wd and everything but it all of a sudden went into 4wd...

you got the elctric switch right ?? if so it could be a short. i got a wierd thing too i am supose to have limeted slip in the front but everytime i get into some mud all4 tire are slinging the mud i never see the drivers side tire stop turning when it gets in a bind???

Well see that's the thing I was spinning the tires for quite some time and then all of a sudden the 4wd kicked in and off I went. I know it doesn't normally switch on and off on it's own because I can feel the difference in the steering wheel when it is on...

i would check the switch or get one of them voltage meters from walmart that plug into the 12volt outlet i have one and they work great they even light up at night but when something eletrical happens on the hpx you will see a fluctuaion in the battery voltage. so that way you know it's something eletrical and not mechanical. them meters are 14.00

I am trading in my 06 HPX on a 07 XUV. I checked at the dealership today and it came in but they are waiting for a few of the options to arrive. I ordered the deluxe light kit and the original computer message to the dealer said the light kit would not be available until October, yes October 2007. The dealer called JD and they are about to renumber some wiring bundle for the XUV. I would think it would be the same or nearly identical to the HPX. He was told there should be more information out within the next few days. I am getting the gas version with dump bed, bed liner, grill guard, floor mats, horn, skid plate, poly roof, brake lights, turn signals, tail lights and flashers. Should be ready next week except for the light kit.

I picked up my new XUV this week but now it is too cold to take it out. From what limited use I have had with it I can tell it is quicker, rides better but is much more noisy. I believe that to be combination of the poly roof and with the XUV, the muffer is directly to the rear of the bed. The HPX had the muffler underneath.

Most of the options arrived within a few days, inlcuding the skid plate. The deluxe light kit originally was back ordered until October; however, JD changed their bundle code and it was shipped out on April 4th so it will be here next week. It is still in the 20's here yet today with about a 20 mph wind but I might brave it this afternoon.

Go for it. We have the same weather here and I've been out and about. Watch those ears if your heading into the wind at 30 mph they get cold fast!

All Gator's have 2 high back single seats which are very comfortable, however, it does limit you to two passengers. From what bench seats I have seen you would have a hard time putting three in them anyhow unless the people were small in stature.

John Deere claims they use the bucket seats for more driver and passenger stability which has some truth. There is supposed to be less sliding around when the trails get rough. I feel their main reason for the two separate seats is that it was easier for them to engineer it that way.

I know I considered the Kubota but their bench seat is extremely awkward. You have to climb over some handles to the side of the seat to get in which also makes the bench seat narrower. I went to the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville this February and sat in about 15 or 20 different brands. To me the Gator had the most comfortable and natural entry and egress which is very important to me. Some bucket seats were so narrow that it pinched the sides of my legs while others had no leg room or the seat was positioned to where you either got hung up on the seat side rails or the roll bar.

I have had 4 new Gators in the past 4 years. I came so close to buying a Rhino when I bought by 05 Gator but backed out at the last minute because they were so cheaply made and I wanted something I could use to work, haul and pull with. The Rhino was one of those hard to get in (for a big person) and all you get is speed. The Rhino had a better ride than the 05 or 06 HPX but the new XUV took care of that concern.
