Massey has some recommendations for engine oil weight that are (naturally) temperature dependent. Living in Colorado, we could see 90's in the summer with 50's in the evening and freezing in the late spring and early fall when day temps could be in the 80's. Winters could be blast below 0 or in the 60s on a warm winter day.

What works well for engine oil weight when using the machine through all conditions? Both for conventional and an Amsoil synthetic?

I'd prefer to not be changing oil more than annually or at the proper hour mark... Probably will see in the neighborhood of 100 hrs/yr. Or... Are premature oil changes a necessary evil?

Screenshot_2016-09-01-15-42-39.png The service manual calls for a diesel 10W30 oil for all temps. Most synthetic oils beat standard oils in most test; however, standard diesel oils meet all requirements!

Thanks. Maybe I'm reading this incorrectly. Doesn't it say 10W/20W/30W for different temperature ranges?

It says to use 10W, 20W, 30W for specific temp ranges, or 10W-30 for any temp.

Alright, thanks - I wasn't clear on the notation, but that makes complete sense now. Thanks for pointing out what should have been more obvious.

10W, 20W & 30W are rarely used anymore because they are so limited. Multi weight oil such as 10W30 flows better at cold temperatures, but provides excellent viscosity at operational temperatures. Remember to use oil rated for diesel engines. The base oil is exactly the same as gas oil, but the additives are different.

I guess one of the things that is confusing is that the Amsoil heavy Duty Diesel oil is rated and/or advertised as: 10W-30/SAE 30 Synthetic Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil. It's not clear to me if it is therefore more visous than the Amsoil OE 10W-30 Synthetic Diesel Oil, which does not carry the dual rating.

My diesel truck, cat excavator, and tractor all get 5w 40 T6. I run it all year with no issues, even in cold Wyoming. In general most synthetic diesel oils are 5w40 and 10w30, 15w40 is conventional Dino. Go synthetic it's not that much more, why not.

You can get synthetic oils in just about any weight.

If it helps, I switched over to Amsoil ACD in my GC1720.
