Looking to use a tiller to redo my lawn.

The grass was killed with glyphosate 2 weeks ago. Dirt under is not incredibly hard.

My plan was (for most of the area) to till good quality topsoil into the existing top soil and then use box blade and drag harrow to get the humps and bumps out.

The smallest rental tiller I can find in my area is a 55in JD 655.

Will a tiller this large on a 23hp scut work ok if I take multiple light passes? Or am I asking for trouble? I feel I'll be fine if I take it easy, but I have zero experience with PTO driven implements.

I would not try a 55" tiller on a GC.

But, I'm sure someone out there will say it works fine.

Ideally, you use a Box pulverizer and Gill rake. That's also probably not going to work well on a sub compact. But, perhaps you can rent a tractor with one, or hire someone to do it for you?

You are right at the limit for the 655. Its recommended for the JD2305 (equivalent to the GC2300) with front weights (or FEL and maybe a load of dirt). For an existing garden, I would say great. Tilling over sod in ground that may be hard pan (dry summer) might be too much for the little tractor. Time, fuel, wear on the tractor and rental costs (along with, will the 3pt and pto shaft fit), might be better to hire a landscaper with CTL and power rake. They would have it done in an afternoon, with greater precision. It's probably one of those jobs used to justify the purchase of the GC, but in this case, hire it out.

thanks for the opinions guys. I'm pretty good on a CTL - originally i was going to use a harley rake on a CTL and do my entire yard at once. i'm trying to divide the project into 3 managable chucks with cheaper alternatives + the GC. DMW, that's a great document.

A rental yard about 45min from me rents out a 48" Box Grader/Landscaper, I belive they manufacture this impliment via one of their sub-companies. my fear is that, even with the grass completely dead, I will be dealing with chunks of sod..?

another one of options is to wake up early and use a walk-behind on a 4000sqft patch...
