Gotta agree with Art "been there done that"

I ALMOST did something like that for a customer.
Took the tractor out...stayed with the tractor(customer not happy over that one) watched him borderline abuse the tractor.....asked to show him a few things and slowed it down a bit.
Truth was he wanted to backfill around his new house.
Had another brand coming the weekend after mine was supposed to be there.....
He didn't buy either...used the local dealers and got his work done for free equipment and free fuel.
Can't stay in biz like that.

I would love to be able to do it but it just can't happen.

Not all people are trustworthy

Dealers aren't trustworthy either. I was/am new to tractor use and buying. Dealer told me my mf231 was a 95 model with 200 hours. Come to find out it was 90 model and hour meter didn't work. After several letters/calls to AGCO found out tractor rear main gears had been replaced under warranty also. Don't get me wrong it is a great tractor I've had for almost 7 years now and wouldn't get rid of but I'd definitely want it at least looked at by a mechanic and a test drive new or not. My dad just bought a john deere which he used for about 6 unattended hours before buying. You would test drive a car right. Tractors are just as big an investment. Just my .02 Christopher

This is true.....unfortunately.

The statement wasn't directed at ONLY customers.

You have to do your own homework and don't always believe the dealer.....or the customer. Always check serial numbers, etc. We have all been taken at least once and always by the person you thought you could trust.....I know I have. Most people figure a dealer makes alot of money so it won't hurt them to get stuck with a bad motor etc. This isn't true...it all adds to the bottom line.

That is why no-one can be trusted....on integrity alone.

Scary when you figure that alot of business things are done in trust.

Didn't mean to stand on top of the soap box Kiohio I agree with both sides of the discussion. Also want to say thnks to all for the advice posted here. I have learned a lot. Can't say that I was completely hurt on the deal. Agco provided me with a couple of attachments and straightened out the hour meter for me. Dealer since went out of business and I think I've found someone decent to deal with. Again thanks to all the regulars for their help.

Kiohio,
I had no idea people used dealers like that, but I guess they do. Glad you and the lovely Mrs. Kiohio trusted me to drive out with that tooth bar....... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
In all honesty people, Kiohio ordered a toothbar for me without demanding payment up front. It came in and I went to pick it up without asking about payment options ( had no cash/check on me........silly me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif). Jeff trusted me to send him payment for a toothbar I had already picked up. I think I had a check sent out in the next days mail. I knew he was a member here and if I stiffed him, well..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I would never have thought about stiffing him for that piddly amount of "profit" he made on that sale, let alone ask him to bring over a tractor for hours/days so I could backfill around my house. I would love to demo a tractor unattended for a few days, but I would never expect a dealer to actually agree to do that. Nor would I abuse something that belongs to someone else. Are there dealers that are willing to do that? Maybe so, but not around here /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif at least that I know of.
Edit......I had never met Kiohio until I went to pick up that toothbar.......but he trusted me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yea, the story about the guy wanting a free tractor to backfill his house blew me away. I guess I should not be surprised. In my job, I provide design and engineering help for new products and it is not unusual for people and companies to use us for our expertise and then give the job to someone else with no consideration for the free engineering they received.

Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw for the local SPCA. It summed up my feelings about some people. It reads "The more I know people, the better I like my dog." /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

[to bring the equipment to your house to try it.] 28RED HORSES You received alot of attention with that one. Up here you either rent or try it in their yards. I haven't found a dealer that would let the machine go for a couple of days, If you hear of one PLEASE let me know and have them deliver it up north!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Charlie

In my recent tractor shopping I found one dealer who would let me take a unit home. It was the JD dealer. My family had spent near $100k with him in the last 10 yrs or so. He let me take a 2210, FEL, MMM. I filled the tank, did about 5 minutes of FEL work, and about 15 munites of mowing. Then I spent about an hour cleaning before returning it the next day. The rest of the dealers (2 Kubotas, 2 Mahindras, 1 Kioti, 1 MF, 1 NH) would not lend, rent, or tell me where I could rent one of their brands.
