GC2310 Won't even turn over

I reinstalled the starter and started it right up. I did notice I had positive voltage to the starter without the key being in the on position. I found that out when tightening the positive wires to the starter with a wrench that touched the engine block and it sparked. Is it normal to have 12v at the starter with the key in the off position?

"Is it normal to have 12v at the starter with the key in the off position?"

Yes. You can see in the wiring diagram, the battery (#38) positive terminal and the wire that goes directly to the starter. The rest of highlighted yellow traces the path through the fuse to the ignition switch. Red is the feed from the switch to the starter relay.

When the key is turned to "START," the relay (on the left end of the starter motor, #33) is energized and makes the connection to ground. I believe that dashed line represents the ground cable I mentioned earlier.

You're most welcome.

I had to do all that research when my ground cable broke, trying to figure out the problem. Lots of four-letter words & head scratching as I watched the snow piling up.

It was another TBN member who suggested I check that &*^$% ground cable. So, yes, BTDT! Glad to help, and happy you got it fixed. Think maybe you had a poor connection on one of the cables? ijk

CJN, glad you got it going again.

You might want to check voltage at the starter solenoid coming from the ingition switch (through all the safety switches) to see what you're getting. My old 1010 got down to just over 9 volts. I found some old threads and following them, installed a Radio Shack relay on the firewall of my tractor so all the 9 volts had to do was throw that relay, which I used to then send the full 12 volts directly to the solenoid. My 1010 starts like a demon now.

Not sure why I have the voltage drop though. I had already replaced the ignition switch trying to correct the issues....I assume I just have corroded connections somewhere.
