On the rear end, at the drive shaft. I have a leak. I have the replacement seal and O ring. Can this be replaced without taking the rear end out of the tractor?
I have a picture but don't know about this URL thing, so I can't attach it.
Any assistance/advise appreciated.

I posted on here a couple years ago about the leaky stearing control unit.
This was easy to take apart and rebuild---with the help of the great people here of course, who gave me the part # for the rebuild Kit.

Walt, can you post it here for me, if you still have it?

Thanks
Mac Clarke

Here are pics of the seal Mac's talking about, around the HST output shaft.

Anyone else tackle this one? Can it be changed from the outside, or does the HST assembly have to come off?

I'm wondering if that shaft can come apart here at the joint.

Then I could change the seal from the top as shown.

From what I was told when I bought my GC is that the shaft will slide forward enough to remove the fan and install a new one. It isn't supposed to be a big deal. That is just what I was told.

I specifically asked them about the fan replacement due to the fact so many have posted here on how the BX's is a nightmare to change.

I can't answer specifically as to whether the seal can be replaced without removing the transaxle from the machine or not.

But what I can say is that the driveshaft must be removed either way, and once the driveshaft is off, the fan removal is easy.............take it apart and see what it looks like.

And to Mac...........the bolt that 'clinches' the driveshaft, to the 'transaxle shaft' (just in front of the fan), is what you want to remove. It may be tight on the shaft............be careful spreading the jaws.......they are cast, and can break easily.

This sounds promising indeed. Wondered how easy the fan replacement would be. I shall check the shaft removal, first thing in the morning. Midnight here now. I was looking at the other end of that drive shaft at the motor end and it did not look like it could slide any. Perhaps because of the angle I was looking at it.
As previously mentioned there appears to be a spring clip at the HST and I have the seal and o ring for there. At least that's what the parts guy sold me. Ha! Ha!
Thanks again for the advise
Sure appreciated.

The shaft came off with no difficulty, one bolt removed and the propeller hasd to unbolted of the flange so the flange could come off once cotter pin pushed out. Here is where I'm at. I might have to rethink the schematic again that was shown here because the one I down loaded has only one outer seal. The other schematic show two. A # 4 and I think # 21. Perhap two versions of the HST. Mine being the older version.

I'm glad to hear you got this far with no difficulty.( reason no. 2 that I'm glad I purchased the Massey).

Take the rest apart and see if you have 1 seal or 2.............it's the only real way to tell for sure.
