Definately let you guys know what is behind there tomorrow, for sure.
I think I should drain some oil out of the unit prior to removing the clip.

Question!
Any of you know what the plate, behind the spring clip, is called?

Just in case I have to order it. I would think the actual seal that I was given fits behind it.
I hate to have to drive all the way to the dealer with a colour photo, in order to order it, if you know What I mean.

There should be nothing behing the clip but the 'seal', but I would be surprised if it is just a seal............I think there are bearings in there also................judging by the size and configuration.

EDIT: Judging by the picture, that 'seal' should consist of an ..outer race, roller bearings, inner race, and a seal.

Mac, take a look at the email I sent you-- some explanation there that might help. Basically, I agree with Don87- should just be a seal, but behind that there's a bearing.... but I still cannot determine if the seal's removable from the outside.

According to my workshop manual, the seal looks to be removed from the front, behind that is a lip in the case, and then the bearing, which looks only to be accessed from the inside of the unit. The part # for the seal is supposed to be 3702490M1. And the snap ring is 3702435M1. Good luck. Hope this helps. They are calling it just an oil seal.

Wacky thanks for the part # sure appreciate it.
I took that clip ring off and as the others also said, it is a seal for sure.
Feels rubbery. :).
I would think that there is a seal in past the bearing also. I don't have the service manual yet. The dealer said that they would only order the manual when they had other manuals to order, to save on shipping charges.!!!
I appreciate what they are saying, but I kinda ordered it because I needed it, like right now.
Anyway I can at least order the proper seal cause the one they previously gave me is much smaller and appears to be one for the PTO shaft or some where else. It is part # 4267507M1. Also "0" ring # 3704953M1.

Well, I'm looking at this and I'm not sure about how to try to get that seal out and off the shaft, with out making some awful faces. It appears that four bolts and disconnecting the foot control linkage and such, will allow the cover to come off. That is if the shaft will come with it, cause there is that MMM cross member bar in the way.
Hope I'm not driving you guys nuts with this, but I sort of find it interesting, if not fun, doing things myself.
Everyones advise sure is appreciated.

This seal ( looks like half of a seal) came out with a slight pull of a small screw driver.
Then there is the other spring clip and the bearing. It is part # 3 in my parts picture and order number 3758574m1.
Called a plug,BOA

What I see past that seal.
Is that an unusual amount of fluid to be at that bearing. I'm thinking not.
But I know nothing, about how that bearing is supposed to be lubricated.

Upon further reading the bearing looks to be able to be removed from the front too. Just remove the 2 snap rings and it should come out. Just info for those that may have a bearing failure, which you don't appear to have. I think that oil you see is probably less than it would have while running. Looks like good clean oil and no bluing of the bearing.
The model # for the HST in my GC is HMS1-21UL-010, not sure if yours is the same, but those parts look to be just identical.

Also check your air breather in the oil fill cap. The manual says that a clogged breather could lead to thermal expansion of the oil in the reservoir which causes internal pressure to rise leading to oil seal failure.

Mac, looking at this recent picture, I'd leave the bearing right there and just replace that seal.

I know it looks like "half a seal," but that's the same as general seal construction, just one metal face and a rubber insert with a tensioning spring inside. I think that's the whole seal you have there on your finger.

As Wacky said, the bearing LOOKS to be all right (if you grab the shaft, is there a lot of up & down play?); if the seal is replaced, your leak should stop.

Thanks again for all the great pics- I'm sure we GC owners will all get there sooner or later!

Oh- and at last the question is answered: the seal IS removable from the outside!!
