Gear drive vs hydro

Wait MR!, Don't close it yet, I haven't made my stupid comment yet!

Gear drive vs hydro? - I prefer .....neither! for FEL work that is.

I'll hop in the Case 580 with TC drive/power shuttle for loader work.
NOTHING can touch that for ease of use.
Imagine your car (with automatic trans) with a FEL on it.
Put it in drive and go. Need to push into a pile of whatever - push on the gas pedal more. Shift into reverse and push the gas pedal.
No dinking with dual HST or pivoting pedals combined with trying to coordinate the separate hand throttle for a specific working RPM high enough to give adequate hyd flow, but will waste fuel.

However, change the context of the question, such as for cutting grass -
HST is the only way to go.

Yeah. Years ago Mark Chalkley was talking about his earth force loader/backhoe and he mentioned a feature like that. Whereas most hydros should be kept and high engine RPMs for full flow and control, his earth force sensed the need based on throttle pedal, etc... as you describe. That is still a hydro, but the engine revs like a car. Neat and saves tons of fuel.

I think that might depend on the grass.

I think we can probably establish some sort of agreement here that "mowing the grass" refers to lawn work, unless you are some D.E.A. agent charged with "crop removal". Mowing the pasture, that's AG work.

I think we split hairs a little too fine here.

Mowing the grass.. as it specifically spells out.. seems like a generic term where you are mowing.. grass.. doesn't seem to indicate location.

Mowing the pasture deffinately has an ag sound to it.

Mowing the lawn has a 'lawnmower' sound to it.

Mowing the grass means some grass. somewhere.. is going to get mowed.

Remember logical data sets in statistics.. population inside of circle A, seperate population inside of cicle B.. and Circle C encompases circle A & B.. A= (grass)lawn.. B= (grass)pasture C = any grass.. Thus A&B...

Good Evenin George,
I think we scared Deere755 away, his last post was on page 21 ..... ;):)

I beleive he made up his mind a long time ago. Hopefully, he now knows what he needs and not just what he wants.

Sincerely, Dirt

Lawn work? If that's the case we might want to take this discussion over to LTBN....Lawn Tractor By Net.:D

That's fine. I mow pastures sometimes. Mostly fescue. Which is grass.....mowing the grass....honest mistake.

But there are two acres in front of my cabin. No crops there. Now cows. Does that count as lawn? I mow it for the appearance. Its grass....and weeds....just like my lawn at home. And I can do the same thing with the throttle there....so maybe my point still stands?

Or are we just talking about little lawns? The kind you can mow with my Snapper?

Or on the hydro you could just set the cruise control. And if you just so happen to mow an account with very bad ruts, ditches, washes etc, you never touch a peddle other than forward, a little more or a little less depending on how big the ditch. ;)

Good point. In that case I'd have to bump the lever down a bit. Or if I needed more power just press the throttle pedal a little. So yes, HST would be better in that circumstance, but not much. But, add more ditches, hills, and ruts and HST is even better still.

The property I was referring to was a real PITA. 6 hours of brushhogging that would normally take 2-2.5 max. Would not want to do it again regardless of tractor type.

Maybe we should hunt him down and MAKE him TALK... pour a circle of hydro fluid around him, tell him he's now sub-set 'D' as we glare at him with a bic lighter. That'd teach him.

Well, if he does come back, I sure hope he bought an HST!

Good try but no cigar. Your summary is out of context. First, all the 'ifs' you mention were for the sake of a single argument, which was to point out that for some of us simplicity is a valuable asset. Second, if I'm supposed to spend all this quality time on an HST (none of which would ever be enough for you HST police to concede was enough for me to have a valid opinion anyway) then how in the heck do you expect me to do so? I'm mean really. What utter nonsense. "Go spend some time on one." How? Where? None of my neighbors here in the suburbs has one and none of the farmers next to my land have one, or even know what they are. Are we going back to the "rent one" thing. Once again, why? If I didn't like it I'd be out the rental money and would have achieved NOTHING. If I loved it and couldn't live without it, then still, NOTHING changed. I couldn't afford one when I bought mine and right now, I couldn't afford what I paid for my geared tractor. So, unless you can put up a better suggestion then you might as well drop that fantasy.
Sorry, youre glossing over points made and jumping around to suit your argument. Mine is a more accurate interpretation of the composite of points you have manipulated thruout the thread. Unfortunately, some good information is lost by the necessity to keep it brief, non self contradictory, and accurate to the ultimate point:
