Not always true. Some hydraulic pumps are designed for motor oil.Whenever a hydraulic pump is present hydraulic fluid is what is used with grade appropriate for where you are.
That is in lieu of 80 or 90 SAE .
My take is that pump or not better to go with hydraulic if for nothing else than price consideration.
If the tranny has bronze bushings, like on the ends of the shafts, rumor has it that GL-5, containing sulfur is bad for them (combined with water makes for Sulphuric Acid) and GL-1, straight mineral oil is recommended. Most after market independent and some chains keep a bucket or two around . WW in a town south of here stocks it too.
Some folks have converted to 134A which is a universal tranny/hyd oil that replaced 80, 90 and 80W-90 in their Fords and why not MF also? I had a couple of MF 35's and as I recall it was the fluid of choice as the hyd pump operated off the PTO shaft.....been a long time, but I still have the manuals and could look it up. Oil is lighter and winter performance is improved but is thinner, like 15 to 20 weight and if your seals are worn out you may have leaks with it. I think in the mid to late '60's it replaced gear oil. My TO-20 used gear oil.
