that LO-1,2,3,5, HI-4,6,7,8 is because the top gear in LO range, (5), is a higher ratio than the bottom gear, (4), in Hi range.
Exactly! I think of it as three working gears plus a high-speed transport gear, in each range.

It's not like a truck where you go through the gears sequentially since you can't shift while moving. Operation is real simple: 1) select a gear suitable to the task. 2) proceed.

you can but i would not try it. There are several you tube vids where its dones. One is from a guy i think posts here. I thik he is in europe somewhere and has a ym 2000. Again i would not try it but can be done. Its to easy to just stop and go to risk stripping gears.

Kind of like the old CJ5 i use to drive for work on the farm, i could drive it and never touch the clutch, it had no safty switch so you could start it in gear and it would catch and run, then shift to second while moving no clutch and then to 3rd with out clutch, also i could down shift all the way to first. If you wanted to stop without stalling or go into reverse you had to use the clutch though.

Well it's great to have a lot of friends now from whom I can learn a lot about my tractor. The JD303 is unfortunately not available here, even the specialists didn't know (we weren't surprised). From several tractor-owners I understood that they use the 80W/90 (like the oldies I also understood from you). So we began with "Operation Oil" yesterday.

Ok here is the next question to ask your oil folks, ask for Hydraulic/transmission oil. It is what jd303 oil is, its used in almost all new tractors weather hydrstatic drive or gear drive, as most moder tractors use the same fluid in the same resivoir or different resivoirs.

This is a link to a chain store here in the US that carries oils. This is there store brand of hydraulic/transmission fluid.

Traveller Universal Tractor Trans/Hydraulic Fluid, 5 gal. - 0806391 | Tractor Supply Company

Note the hdro and trans name on the fluid. Pure hydro fluid is in weights like AW-68- AW-90 and so on for thickness.

Actually, JD303 is old stuff, and has been superceded by J14B-C, J20A-B-C, and J21A.
