Exactly! I think of it as three working gears plus a high-speed transport gear, in each range.that LO-1,2,3,5, HI-4,6,7,8 is because the top gear in LO range, (5), is a higher ratio than the bottom gear, (4), in Hi range.
It's not like a truck where you go through the gears sequentially since you can't shift while moving. Operation is real simple: 1) select a gear suitable to the task. 2) proceed.
